Or maybe the manufacturers ADD the "pew-pew" sound effect as a clear indicator to the wielder that the weapon's being fired so they're less likely to fire the weapon off by accident.

Pew-pew.
1. They are partially magic (even "pure tech" has some magic in it according to the CRAB).
2. This game is science fantasy. Even science fiction usually has sound. Science fantasy absolutely does.
3. The APs have described laser weapons making noise.
4. Any laser weapon, even a realistic one, capable of Starfinder damage outputs, would make noise. From a whine as they power up, to the sounds of a capacitor discharge, to the popping from the air being super heated and then being displaced.

Also, just because the laser beam itself doesn’t make a sound, that doesn’t mean the gun doesn’t. We are dealing with sci-fi magic future tech. Maybe some other part of the assemblage makes some noise when the laser fires.
Yeah, that’s what I was saying! :)

If they hit something you are physically touching or yourself you would probably hear something. The sound of materials flash evaporating/being punctured and or any air being boiled for a moment. Probably not very loud but likely something you would notice if you are in physical contact with something being struck.

Actually there would be a VERY loud "FWOP" sound when a powerful laser that deals damage equal to a bullet. The moisture in the air would get flash fried, there would be an imbalance. Firing such a laser would NOT be quiet.

On one of the Starfinder panels, they mentioned that they worked with Syrinscape to get the weapon sounds right, so if you want, you can even hear what _kind_ of pew pew they make. The 'Sound Set Features' has a list.

Go to 1:30 in and that is what lasers sound like. This is probably as 'official' a source as your gonna get since the they state the Paizo staff worked with them to make these sounds just right. :)
