Can weapons or grenades with the explode property critically hit? At first I thought it would similar to pathfinder where attacks targeting a square would not deal extra damage on a critical but the Plasma Cannons are explode weapons with a critical effect. If it is not an error that they have a critical effect would they crit when the attack roll to hit the intersection is a natural 20 and would this do double damage in addition to the critical effect?

I asked the same question a few days ago. There was no official reply, but the consensus seemed to be that Yes, they can critically hit, but like all Explode weapons, all affected targets get a reflex save to take half damage and to ignore additional effects.

That 'Save for Half' balances out the easier to-hit roll (and effectively guaranteed crit confirmation).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Also of note: Save DCs from explosives or crit effects are lowered by the same amount as any penalties to the attack roll. So if you toss a grenade and have a -2 to hit from range and -2 from off target a DC 14 save becomes a DC 10. This makes Deadly Aim a bit worse in some cases since it is also an attack penalty.

What is this "crit confirmation" you speak of?

(There's no need to confirm criticals in Starfinder.)

I mean the save vs the crit effect.

There is actually. It's just not another roll. If you roll a 20 you automatically hit, and then you check to see if you would have hit just based on the number 20 and your attack bonuses. And then if you would you get extra damage and effects. I mean if you're fighting something that your attack bonus plus 20 doesn't hit you're pretty much dead anyway but you won't get bonus damage or maiming either.
