The text of the ability says:

If you have a solarian crystal that changes the type of damage dealt by a solar weapon, you can use it to change the type of damage you deal with your sunbolt.

but Solarian weapon crystals don't change the damage type of your solar weapon, they just add additional damage and critical effects. Is it supposed to to allow you to add the damage from a weapon crystal to Sunbolt? Is it just a vestige of an older version of Solarian weapon crystals?

Future-proofing, most likely. This way they don't have to change anything if (when?) a crystal that does change damage type is released.

Depending on how fusions and weapon crystals mesh a Corrosive/Flaming/Frost/Shock crystal may change your weapon's damage if the fusion's effect alters the whole of the weapon and not just the bonus damage.

Yeah, that's one thing I was thinking. But there's no mention of weapon fusions in the ability, which seems a little weird. Also, as you mentioned, we still don't know how exactly those fusions interact with stellar weapons.
