Grenades: How do they even work?

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

As the topic says, the rulebook seems to be written in odd text. Does anyone within the explosion radius take the damage? Are they permitted a save, or is the save merely for any additional special effect of the grenade?

Scarab Sages

The explode text on pg 181 is clear.

Everyone in the blast radius takes damage, with a reflex save for half damage. If the grenade has non-damage effects, those are negated on a save.

It is a Dex based save if needed to be said, but Str to hit area/target.

Grenades:

  • Attack roll based on Strength, target a grid intersection
  • Scatter if miss
  • Damage roll only bonus is Weapon Specialization (not Str or Dex)
  • Explode DC is based on Dexterity

Pg 59, Weapon Proficiency and Specialization wrote:

Grenades, missiles, and other consumable weapons never add specialization damage, even when you’re using weapons like a cyberbow or

grenade launcher.

You may never have Weapon Specialization with Grenades. So, grenades only ever do flat weapon damage.

You're right. I missed that. :)

Though I don't understand why you can't throw the grenade to actually _HIT_ the target for STR dmg before it goes off. :p

Well, if you threw it hard and bonked your target on the head, the grenade might then bounce off and land at your feet...

Heh! If the bounce can bring it back to your feet, the target was too close to begin with for grenades!

Don't even pull the pin just bonk them in the head with it.

Enemy: OW are they throwing rocks at us? *looks down* AHHH *dives for cover*

Announcer: Grenades their like rocks but with a fear aura!

Seriously, I think I'd allow a +STR to damage on a grenade if the player is willing to give up -4 to hit. I'm sure grenades have an 'on impact' option, with every other option included, along with computer activation.

If you are no longer aiming for the square the AC would go up quite a bit so really I don't think it would be OP in fact on most situations it might even be the weaker option. pretty well automatic aoe versus 1d4 + str to hit targets ac.
