So just something from a game mechanics standpoint, how often are you supposed to get new weapons/armor?
Like, in pathfinder, it was pretty simple, because upgrading was a thing. Every few levels you were generally expected to get the next +1 to your weapon/armor. Seemed to be roughly another +1 every 3-4 levels, depending. But with Starfinder you seem to need a whole new set of armor/weapon every so often. So how often is that? Do you need new stuff EVERY LEVEL to remain competitive? Every other level?
I ask both as a player and as a GM. How often should I have players find a new set of armor, or give them a rest-and-refuel at Absolom Station where they can by that new plasma doshko?

Worst case, make sure to provide your PCs with UPBs occasionally and a starship workshop, and let them make the choice when to upgrade. Plus, they can trade the UPBs for cash when they need to, and they don't need to take downtime in civilization so much if they're in the middle of something serious in the Vast.

You don't have to get rid of your old guns and gear if there are different levels of the same thing.
I'm pretty sure you're allowed to upgrade your azimuth laser pistol to a aphelion laser pistol, paying only the difference between them, for example.

Only things you can "upgrade" are:
- Personal Upgrades (difference in credits)
- Ship upgrades (difference in BP's)
This seems to be also a "strength" of Solarians with their free automatic upgrades.

There doesn't appear to be any way to upgrade items to higher level versions of themselves. That wouldn't be particularly helpful in a lot of cases (besides armor) anyway- a lot of weapon types have huge gaps where there aren't any upgrades available.
You can use old gear at 10% of it's purchase value as 'scrounged parts' when making things yourself.
It is either in crafting or the Gamemastering section.
