# 1-00 "Claim to Salvation" GM Thread [SPOILERS]

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just prepping this, and thought I should start a thread for anyone to contribute. A couple of random thoughts:

1. I think the space goblin bullies' "souped-up junklasers'" ability to twist time and space to summon another space goblin is a bit too much on the silly side. But, admittedly, I like my gaming darker than some.

2. The DCs for moving the captured space goblins' from Hostile to Indifferent doesn't exactly match that for using Diplomacy as described in the Core Rulebook. But I guess it's mostly close enough, and it's not unusual for scenarios to set custom DCs.

More soon!

I'm looking forward to seeing PCs who romped all over the Space Goblins get to the Control Room, mess with a computer console, and be walloped for 8d6 damage! That'll open some eyes.

I wonder if someone can give me a hand with the Dangerous Exhaust Trap on page 18; it says it does damage "plus insanity mist" and I'm trying to figure out what this last bit is: "insanity mist" is not a spell, trap, or affliction (as far as I can tell). Any idea where it appears in the Core Rulebook?

It's under poison. It's really not a save they want to fail!

I rolled a "Nat 1" last night with one of the regular goblins.

Spoiler:
The goblin failed his DC18 engineering check with a 17. One of the PCs asked if he could roll an engineering check to see what happened, so I let him run the same DC18 (which he succeeded) to determine that the junk laser's internal cooling system sprang a leak and that the battery pack would explode in 12 seconds (my 1d3-1 turned up a 3 on the die). The PCs decided to be clever and spare the goblin who had no clue that his junk laser was about to explode like a frag grenade. This was fun! His surrender kicked in the next round so he charged up to the PCs with 6 seconds left until his junk laser was going to explode! Quig's drone quickly took the laser from the goblin and moved 30 feet (taking a free action to drop it on the ground half-way through the movement), thus saving the party and allowing them to spare and interrogate the space goblin.

Have a plan to help the players with suggestions as to what they can do in ship combat. I filled in 2 copies of the ship character sheet to hand out to each side of the table to share in addition to the handouts.

Remember that before each engineering phase your PCs can move to an unoccupied station as a single move action. Encourage your PCs to man a second or third gun, switch to a science station, etc to find a spot they are each comfortable with. Our captain became a science officer after the first round because they found that having 2 people scanning to get more details was more important initially than the captain's bonuses.

Along that note, when pilotng NPC ships, remember that an NPC pilot (or anyone else) can use a minor action in addition to their one standard crew action. So you can shoot for less or move worse but do both in one round by taking a minor and regular. It'snot move or shoot. you CAN do both.

Note the PCU value of each weapoon. It matters if they scan you down.

Have weapon ranges handy. They aren't in the stat blocks.

Play up the transcript of the audio logs. They're priceless!

Read the sidebar for the final encounter mechanics.

Spoiler:
If the PCs link a data pad to the console to control the lights, gravity, etc, it can get to be a lot to keep track of. Especially given the "head" mechanics. read it carefully and makre sure you ahve a good way to track the conditions and when which ones are or are not active.

It's a bit fuzzy where BorgorBago is waiting to ambush the PCs if he's been alerted to their presence. I assume he wants a clear shot of them as they exit the elevator, but the mesh grating means attacks from below are impractical. It's not clear how high the mesh is, so I plan to have him crouching on the crates just to the southeast, where he'll fire during the surprise round and then later jump down for cover.

Interesting the ease in which consciousness can apparently be transferred into an android's body (per Bago's plans).

It's funny that Luwazi demands the PCs hide their affiliation with the Starfinder Society, but then, quite literally seconds later, gives them a ship "with a stylized symbol of the Starfinder Society" on the hull. :)

The DC for the space goblin junkers to use their song to taunt the PCs is not correct according to the formula in the Core Rulebook (since the PCs' ship is Tier 4). But, if the Tier 4 calculation were used, it would be impossible for the space goblins to succeed giving their low Intimidate skill.

Ran this last night, and a good time was had by all. I'll post a formal review in the next few days. Some final (admittedly random) observations:

1. I was and am a bit fuzzy on how the tractor beam was linked to the Exhaust Drinkers. It sounds like they controlled it, but it's not clear how or from where. During the session, I was afraid the PCs were going to investigate (after all, "that's no moon" and the second act of Star Wars is to turn off the tractor beam so the ship can leave). It's just left hanging a bit.

2. I don't think there was enough background on why Livewire's computer harness was so important that she wanted it to go to her family--it was kind of random as portrayed.

3. Role-playing the Warden was one of my favorite parts of the adventure--the PCs were taken aback by being endlessly flattered.

4. I really appreciated the extra hand-outs on starship combat at the end--made for a much smoother first experience.

5. I wasn't sure how to apply the following line that's in the Primary and Secondary success conditions: "The PC also gains 1 Reputation with any one faction for which they hold a faction champion boon, despite not being able to slot a faction boon during this scenario." I wasn't sure how to express this on the Chronicle sheet.

6. I noticed when reporting online that I was asked only to report Reputation, and not Fame, but that the reporting sheet at the end of the scenario has a slot for Fame but not Reputation. I think the online form might be based on PFS, but it was confusing and I ended up leaving it blank for now.

That's it for me. On to The Commencement!

Ok, I lied: two last things.

1. The scenario is quite specific that the PCs are told they can't bring any weapons or "contraband" into the prison. My players spent a long time talking about whether to try to smuggle stuff in (they were sure they were going to get shanked!) and went back and forth on what they could fit into Quig's cheek pouches. However, the scenario doesn't say that there are any actual searches or scanning of visitors, so that seems like an oversight (it doesn't even provide stats for the guards, so I couldn't do Perception vs. Stealth even if I wanted to).

2. I'm not sure if this thread is in the right place or not. Technically, the "GM Discussion" sub-forum is in the "Organized Play" folder, but everything else here has been PFS specific. Should we have separate PFS and SFS "GM Discussion" threads?

Yes please, pull SFS away from PFS for GM Discussion.

At the bottom of the chronicle sheet is the place for tracking of reputation with the various factions. Remember a character can represent different factions at different times so that is where they player can track the specific faction reputation totals.

It was not called out specifically in the scenario but after the briefing is complete the players would have time to slot boons. Because the scenario is so new, no one has boons to slot. Every player has a starting faction champion boon for the faction of their choice so the language is intended for the player to still gain that reward even though the faction's champion boons are not (or were not) out in time.

Thanks, so would you suggest writing something on the bottom of the chronicle like "+1 reputation when applied to a character with a faction champion boon"?

Well per the Guide, a player has to declare what character they are applying a pregen to at the start. So it should be known, at least to the player, what their character's faction is.

Now given that this is all new and players may not understand that, I think it would be ok to write that on the chronicle.

If the player is playing a character they made, then there would be no need to state that.

Did no one notice that the stats for the Pegasus were wrong?

Pegasus in Scenario:
In the Scenario the Shields and Modifiers don't match the guide, the aft shields are an obvious error.

In the Scenario:

Shields light 60; forward 15, port 15, starboard 15, aft 1565/5
Modifiers +4 Computers, +1 Piloting

Pegasus in the Guide:
Shields light 60 (forward 20, port 15, starboard 15, aft 10)
Modifiers +2 to any two checks per round, +4 Computers, +1
Piloting

Yes. It was noticed by the GMs prior to gencon. Thurston corrected in the "First Wave" post on the SFS forum.

Use the guide stats.

As a FYI, there has been a clarification on how the chronicle is to be applied for this adventure. It can be found at this thread.

This is what Thurston said:

Thurston Hillman wrote:

I recently posted this to Venture-Officers, and wanted to make a public announcement.

Starfinder Society #01–00: Claim to Salvation *Clarifications*

-The Chronicle sheet can be applied to a 1st level character with the 720 credits.

-Because the Subtier is 3–4, it can be applied to a 3rd level character.

-In the case of the boons (for either application option), because they specify that they can be used by characters not on this Chronicle sheet, you can use them immediately.
