Is there a way to prevent friendly fire?

Rules Questions

When the wizard, magus, caster hits his AoE is there any way to exclude your party from them? I am not referring to taking precautions like "I will be casting fireballs let me cast resist energy for that on the party before hand". More like "My spells don't hit allies".

There's the selective spell metamagic feat.

The Urban Bloodrager has an ability where targets you select get a bonus on the save and if they make the save they take no effect from the spell/ability.

Don't know about the others though.

You want the Selective Spell metamagic feat. Note that you need to be at least 10th level to have it (since it requires 10 ranks of Spellcraft).

Yeah, you can.

Take the Selective Spell metamagic feat for example. However, it can't be taken before level 10 as it requires spellcraft 10 ranks and increases the spell level by one.

There's a metamagic feat called selective spell that lets you exclude targets from area spells. You must be level 10 to take it.

Clerics can of course use Selective channelling to exclude targets from being hit by their channelled energy. I think its very popular among GMs to give evil clerics this feat. At least I use it.

There might of course be other methods too, but these were the ones I remembered.

EDIT: Wow, I'm slow =)

Thank you!!! :D

This is just proof of how helpful this board can be.

for alchemists bombs there is Precise Bomb which excludes a number of squares up to his INT bonus from the AOE of his bomb.

and what is it you want to prevent me from? :-)

I am late for this, but there is a 7th level spell that allows this for fire spells.

You might also like the Controlled Fireball spell.

Occultists can take an option to spend mental focus in order to exclude squares from evocation AoEs. That is available from first, I believe.

You can also aim in a different way, for example at a point high in the air, so only (e.g.) 3x3 squares on the ground are affected.

Besides, if you want to use something like Wall of Stone anyway, you can use it to block your own Fireball etc..

But Selective Spell is more handy and versatile for sure...

You want Disintegrate. This eliminates allies so that you may safely cast indiscriminate spells such as Fireball without fear of catching them in the area of effect.

Not trying to antagonize or counter the argument, merely want to add on that you do have to 'hit' to use Precise Bomb, so any time you Nat 1 or miss the target Precise Bomb fails and everyone in the bomb radius takes splash damage per normal ;-(

Buy a rod for 3,000 gp.

Buy a rod for 3,000 gp.

The rod becomes affordable much earlier than level 10 when you can take the feat.

Perhaps this is really late, but would a Protection from Good spell help for a low-level scenario?

A +2 resistance bonus to saves overlaps with a popular item (cloak of resistance) and is a long way from immunity, but it might be helpful occasionally.

Not generally worth the action to set up IMO though.

you can also cast Protection From Energy on your allies before hand.

I guess three years late is a great time to agree! no antagonizing detected and clarifications always excepted! Yeah - the alchemist does need to worry about misses... but that is true always and there are ways to reduce or modify even that. (and then again, my name is Friendly Fire for a reason!)

as this is a *Necro* thread...

*PHWA!* simple, kill all your friends or don't take them with you unless they are undead under your control. Friendly fire avoided. Remember to command any undead set afire to grab your enemies, thus avoiding secondary 'friendly' fire.

Okay, maybe your PC is a nice guy...
There's no reason to learn a silly metamagic. Learn your spells! (and thus Area of Effect and Targets)
Get options! Get some Ioun Stones to recall spells 5 First and 1-2 Second. Have an assortment of wands. Sure it costs gold. Welcome to tabletop RPGs.

Fireballs can be cast in the air (it is a sphere) so they don't hit your friends, and teach them to duck on command like "incomming!". It's easier and more cost effective than metamagic.
If you're a silly Alchemist, hitting your party members is just part of the class design. At low levels it's Fire damage, probably the easiest to protect against. Unfortunately Touch AC is hard to buff except for magic users and tiny folk with high DEX. The best (simple) defense is Obscuring Mist (1st) and for your 'friendlies' to attack from the edge of the mist. Get them a Wand. An Arrow Magnet is also effective.
