A guide to playing DBZ in PFS

First off, no, this is not fanboy wankery.

No, okay, listen, it is, but it's also me just messing around and having fun. I'm not going to run around shouting how GOKUZ IZ TEH BESTESTS EVAR!!!11one! This is me realizing that you could have a fun time playing a DBZ-style character in pathfinder. This guide is meant for Pathfinder society, but it could be adapted to any pathfinder game.

It's not a full guide, it's just a little document. I figured out some stuff, a friend wanted to see it because he was thinking of using it, and I ended up writing way more than I wanted to. Seemed kinda a waste just to have it between me and him, so I decided to post it here.

If you have any questions/comments, please (kindly) put them here and I'll consider updating the guide if I get enough interest.

Again, just fun stupid diversion stuff.

Sorry but blowing up the Moon is a tad outside of the expectations of a character in Pathfinder Society.

Maybe you should consider playing the actual DBZ rpg instead?

Dangit, every time I test it, it works for about 5 mins. then stops.

Stupid . . . why can't I get this to work?

@Drahliana 1) I address that. 2) I said that this was just for stupid fun, right?

Maybe this will work

The Exchange

Worked for me. Thanks.

You pretty much basically are locked into Unchained Monk for the bulk of these characters are basically bad parodies of asian fighting monks with a lot of special effects thrown in.

And if you're going to properly do DBZ, you need to extend your play slots from 4 hours to 8 as at least 6 of them will be spent trashtalking and powering up before the combat actually begins.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This is just a lark; a silly, fun little diversion, no need to be snarky. No one is forcing you to be here.

dbz universe every one in the party is either a monk or a blood rager and the kamehameha is just a lightning bolt spell

I would defiantly look at a supers rpg for this...

Silver Crusade

I like it, I never thought about the Kineticist for a concept like this. I wonder, though, if it's possible to stuff a barbarian/unchained barb/bloodrager into the build somewhere? Afterall, getting angry and going all Gohan on the enemy is a staple of the show. ;)

First all, I am not looking to exactly make DBZ characters. I thought I was pretty explicit that this was just fun goofing around. It's just a way to have a fun DB-esque character in Pathfinder. I know there are other systems that can do this better. That's not the point.

Well, there is the Bloody-Knuckled Rowdy bloodrager archetype. The bloodrage could be your 'super saiajin' transformation too.

Sadly, with only one level, your rounds of bloodrage will be severely limited. Also, you only get normal Improved Unarmed Strike, so no flurry of blows, you'll only do a d4 damage (or d3 for small), and your fists don't count as weapons (so you can't use oils of bless weapon or whatnot.) I see where you're going, but it's a poor idea IMHO.

super sayan blood rager doesnt kick in till level 10 when you can cast fly on yourself when you enter a rage(level 11 if you dip 1 level into scaled fist monk)

Or, if you read the guide, get 6 levels of Air Kineticist and boom. Plus Air kineticists get ki(netic) blasts.

but they don't get rage which is the closest thing mechanically to what going super sayan is

Look, I'be said it before, it's not going to be perfect. The best way to do it would be a gestalt game, with half your levels in Kineticist and half into brawler 2(or unchained monk 1), then Bloodrager or Barbarian.

But kinetisist nets you gather power, which lets you do the screaming power up thing, and elemental overflow, which does the aura thing.

Plus, as blasphemous as it is, you could play Krillin, Tien, Yamcha, Pan, or a whole host of others that don't go super saiya-jin. Just, just go look at the guide. I go into all of this.

Updated the guide. Fixed a few typos and added the synergy for overwhelming soul/scaled fist monk, for those who want to be more charisma based.

I get that you might be looking for more official stuff, But I cannot stress the awesomeness of this homebrew Ki Master class The Loading Crew made for MasakoX in their Sands of Sala'Bhim Campaign. If you're looking for DBZ, this IS it.

I imagine you also could just do straight Wind Kineticist and have your kinetic blade infusion appear as a gauntlet or cestus. That way you can do the punching thing without needing to multiclass.

Yeah, it's what I do for my half-orc DBZ character.

For me it immediately struck me as the obvious choice for a DBZ-style character, especially the Elemental Ascetic - I mean, the class has an ability called "Gather Power", which causes energy/matter to swirl around you in a 20' radius and can be charged for up to a turn for extra power. Just take Air with the Lightning blast, grab Wings of Air, and fly around gathering energy before blasting enemies with an at-will "energy beam".

As an update, my DBZ character (based on Yamcha) is doing well at level five. His melee to-hit is weak when he piranha strikes (+6/+6), but he does pretty well otherwise. I'm working on getting him a belt of dex to up his to-hit. Is he the most powerful build out there? No. Is he a fun, viable switch hitter? Yes.

Character sheet: http://paizo.com/people/Oocha

Mini I painted for him:

Ironically enough I have survived a certain scenario with exploding Jack-o-lanterns, so. . . Doing good? Also I have done a scenario to get ritual scarification, one across my eye and a cross shaped one on my cheek.

For some reason this makes me think of when Cooler was in his fifth transformation and just flies through the Kamehameha and smacks Goku upside his head while saying, "Hear I am!" or something. My memory is a bit foggy on what he said. Have not seen the movie in years.

Only in DBZ can you have a battle that take 3 and ah half of air time of fighting on a planet dieing in 5 minutes... Or the fact that the Frieza VS. Goku first battle was the longest running battle for nearly all of anime time until recently. Now I hear there is a new king of that spot but I don't what it is. But Goku and Beerus battle in Dragon Ball Super is going long right now.... Hit the hour and ah half mark I think as of my watching the English version.

"Avon Calling!"

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Sacred Fist yet, especially in conjunction with a metamagic'd Blood Crow Strike and Pummeling Style. That's probably the best way to do a straight up Kamehameha, or at least a Big Bang Bomb.

Seems more like Monkey D. Luffy's Gum-Gum Gatling gun

Did another update. Included how to make a piccolo-type-person (not perfect, I KNOW), did some minor editing, smoothed some things out, and put some infusion recommendations in there. Hope you all enjoy.

Good to see some free PFS-legal, DBZ-styled stuff out there. ;)

Glad you approve!

Scarab Sages

Just a minor update, but I've figured out how to emulate the 'Kousoku Idou' (rapid movement, sometimes called the Z-vanish). In other words the DBZ style 'disappear-and-reappear technique.)

In psychic anthology there is an infusion called 'blade rush' that essentially works as the bladed dash spell, but can only be used with the kinetic blade infusion (not kinetic fist, sadly). So make your 'kinetic blade' a cestus or whatever, disappear and reappear next to someone and bam!

Just another fun kineticist power I discovered with the ability to be re-skinned as a Dragonball power. I'll update the file when I get a chance.

I have no mechanical suggestions. But in terms of RP, it won't really feel like DBZ unless you spend at least the first half of each combat grunting as a full round action in order to power up. ^_^

If you want high unarmed damage like a monk, the Monastic Legacy feat helps. It usually needs 3 levels of monk, but you can bypass this with completing the Ascetic Style chain.

That's what gather power is for!

@SheepishEidolon

That's an interesting suggestion. I hadn't heard of that feat. However I think the power is a bit. . . Underwhelming, especially considering it is four feats. I just used an agile amulet of the mighty fists, pirana strike, and 1 trait, and I rock a d6+9. Not crazy, but certainly respectable.
