Rules lawyers should understand that they are a consultant. A consultant offers a service, but if the client isn't paying, then no service is provided.

So is the relationship between the GM and the rules lawyer. If the GM isn't paying for the consultation, the rules lawyer should not be hounding him with advice.

The rules lawyer is NOT a sheriff, meant to keep the GM in line.


I agree 100%.

I have always coveted my playing time to the point of banning rule arguments (cracking open books, etc) in all cases excluding the case of character death.

Anything else can wait, be researched and even discussed ad nauseam with the rules lawyer at some other time.
