What happened to the Shaman?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I remember when the ACG came out a few people mumbled the class looked overpowered and then since then I haven't really heard... anyone mention it ever.

It hasn't gotten a lot of post ACG support outside some a thin addition of new spells.

It's just like everyone forgot it existed suddenly.

Aside from their familiars having elemental paint on them, they're pretty boring conceptually so they're pretty easy to forget.

Liberty's Edge

I still highly suggest the Shaman pre-gen when needing a 4th in PFS, especially if they're lacking both divine and arcane casting, or psychic for that matter. But I've definitely only seen one or two in actual play. I tend to see more witches or spirit guide oracles than shaman, and I'm guessing it's because they don't really occupy enough of their own design space to really stand out.

They are really strong and possibly the best caster. But they don't really have anything unique to them.

Wandering Spirit is a very taxing ability. Too broad.

I absolutely love the class, it's great at filling a lot of roles.

Not a fan...v.poorly designed IMO.

Should have been a strict druid/witch hybrid which is spot on thematically to what it represents.
I would even go as far to state that it shouldnt have been a hybrid class at all and should have been the 'spontaneous druid' that many people have wanted.

As it stands it is a druid/witch/wizard/oracle/cleric hybrid... a complete mess. It is no surprise that it struggles to define itself when it treads on sooooooo many toes!

When I got the book I thought they looked interesting, but as I dug into the mechanics they began to seem like a mess.

I ran an all ACG game afterward and a player played shaman, I wasn't impressed seeing it in action.

Interestingly, after that game my initial opinions of the shaman and investigator flipped.

The Exchange

My friend just finished Eyes of the Ten in PFS with his shaman. The class is a very competent caster, one of the best. It just doesn't have any unique mechanics really. It is a blend of a few different tier 1 classes.

Silver Crusade

Speaker for the Past Shaman is superb: SftP Shaman archetype

It's a variant Wizard with cure spells. Go nuts.

As someone ho's only ever read about the shaman, was exactly is a mess about the class' design? The only impression I got so far is that the whole spirit mechanic is a bit too... all encompassing, I guess? I'd love to hear specifics though.

Investigator and Warpriest seem to definitely be the most popular/discussed ACG classes. To a lesser degree the Swashbuckler and Slayer. I feel like the others don't really come up to much in conversations

Really? I've seen it pop up from time to time in random threads after the initial ACG excitement ran its course. I've even popped it up myself once I finally figured it out -- the design is kind of messy (not overpowered, but could use better organization).

Probably because they are both 2 of the most appropriate thematically and well balanced of the hybrids.

"The proof is in the pudding."... As we say up north!
