I get a Shannara Chronicles vibe from this trailer. Albeit it's looking like the FX budget is more substantial for this one.
Oh I certainly hope not! I'm a life long fan of the Shannara series, but the TV show based on it was, while not absolutely horrible, it wasn't especially good either. It was also very much not a good adaptation of the source material.

Another show where all of the characters have perfect hair, makeup, spotless environments, and unrealistically ornate undamaged equipment and armor... par for the course I suppose, I don't know what I expected really but I can't help but feel like this is going to be overproduced like crazy in attempts to appeal to mass markets by making it all look pristine and attractive.
The WoT world is descended from our world, and they have retained our knowledge of germs and hygiene. In the books the characters - rather infamously - bathe to a ridiculous degree and wash their clothes every chance they get because they know the dangers of bad hygiene.
Not to mention in the real pre-modern world, people didn't roll around in mud and dung and walk around all day in it either. They didn't have our understanding of hygiene but that doesn't mean they wanted to walk around smelling awful either.
Also, relating back to convo up thread, it looks like this first season may cover the first two books and maybe get into the third. Hard to tell for sure.
There are some elements they're bringing forwards from Books 2 and 3 (certain character abilities that kind of came out of nowhere in the books which they're foreshadowing more here), and some major characters show up early in new storylines as in THE EXPANSE, but the main thrust of Season 1's storyline is Book 1. For example, there are no Seanchan to be seen in Season 1.

Yeah, I think they're more talking about the use of permanent hold hair sprays and gels and no fade lip gloss rather than a lack of hygiene.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out what was supposed to be from the 2nd or 3rd, but it's been a long time since I read the first ones and it all kind of blurs. A lot of stuff was introduced in book one, then ignored for a bit and brought back in a lot more depth later.
As for the hygiene, that's a fair take, but even with a good knowledge of hygiene, traveling long distances on foot or horseback tends to wear on you. There's a good distance between "everyone rolls in dung" and no one looks like they've been working or hiking outside all day.

I hadn't noticed anything from Book 2 yet. I mean they've not shown us Shienar or anything related to that. Also no McGuffin that shows up and is a major plot point of Book 2. Now do they show the White Tower of Tar Valon and yes, Siuan Sanche aka the Amyrlin Seat is shown. (And the Ajahs.) But that more window dressing in my book than substantive moving up the story pace. I mean hell, no Darkfriends get shown and there were substantive amount of those in Book 1.

They've shown no shots or stills from Episodes 7 or 8, which is where

You should read some firsthand accounts of first peoples contact. Smelling good wasn't a strong point of most European explorers.
:DAlso, absent modern facilities people get use to their own stink.
Also also, when you lack something clean to change into it rather dampens any proclivity to bath everyday while adventuring.
Briefly, does anyone know why the Shannara Chronicles stopped after two seasons? Is there indication that WoT is being executed to avoid the same fate?

Meh. Prestidigitation and I'm ready for my close up, Mr. Demille.
(Or, on the WoT setting, something-something tying off a weave involving minor uses of air, water and earth to wash and dry my skin and clothes instantly and blow all the dust away.)

Ancient Rome had working plumbing but most people smelled unpleasant most of the time. And a group of people? Yikes! Hence the importance of incense in religious ceremony.
The village and such in the WoT trailer looked generic medieval tech (+ magic I suppose) to me. Maybe hot water plumbing and such are for the upper class in this world?

I didn't think we had any shots/stills other episode one...
The shots in the trailer span the first six episodes, which we know because some of the stills of the Waygate they released a few weeks ago showed they came from episode 106 in the metadata (plus casting).

It got awful ratings and what ratings they did get plummeted from Season 1 to Season 2.
For WoT, there's not much that they can do other than make as good as show as they can and hope people tune in. They do have the benefit of stronger source material and a much bigger, pre-existing fanbase.

In the books, the Winespring Inn (the big tavern) has working plumbing and hot baths, IIRC. It actually looks lower-tech than I was expecting here.

Wert is correct, the Winespring DOES have working plumbing. (I remember this part) Also thanks to Wert for mentioning my favorite thing next to Travel, IE Waygates. If only because a certain thing might show up in Season 2 that is kind relevant to another character that's going to be interesting to see done.

The Aes Sedai (and maybe warders?) have that trick where they ignore heat or cold. That'll help with some of the general sweat. They won't smell as bad after a hard day.
They could use the one power to clean themselves. I doubt they'd use it on the rest of the cast. A lot of people don't like having the power used on them.

Quark Blast |
Thanks Wert, that clears things up.
I liked, for instance, the manky hair Aragorn had most of the time. Not because I like it per se but because it helps make the world real. Like the characters are actually living there. For that adaptation it makes sense for the elves to be spiffy whereas the bairns of the Riddermark are showing their snogder.
For WoT let's hope the fanbase (old and new) are happy and keep the ratings up. Though after GoT and the Vikings, among many others, we may be approaching the saturation point.

Yes, exactly. I hate to be this guy and all but when I see a fantasy series shot where all of the main characters look like they were pulled straight from an Instagram photoshoot I am not apt to feel like I will have the ability to get immersed in their world.

Liev is awesome, but hes Lord of the Rings caliber. I think you wont see many A listers in Wheel of Time.
WoT has one current A-lister (Rosamund Pike) and one previous A-lister (Sophie Okonedo, around the time of HOTEL RWANDA) in the cast, so that's a bit of an odd thing to say. They could easily get an actor of Schreiber's calibre for the show. I suspect they won't because the cost of importing American actors is much less than for just hiring European actors, though they did for Daniel Henney.

"You look different."
"Yeah, I got a new haircut."
"That's it."
Sometimes yeah. In GoT the changed the mountain what 3 times? Not too noticeable. The rogue character that gets with Kalessi? Super noticeable.
