Jade Regent Re-Recruitment (Gestalt Level 3)

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 139 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I need two new characters for a Jade Regent game! We're most of the way through book 1, but the party is down to one character. *Coughs* So, uh, yeah.

Original build rules here, and follow that except for being Level 3 (with standard Wealth By Level). Also, having a campaign trait is now optional ('cuz they're kind of meant to be something happening at the start...).

This recruitment will last for 1 week. Remember, I like backstories more than anything else, so a well-written write-up of your character is the best way to get picked. ^^ Your stories should explain how you came to Brinewall Castle, overlooking an abandoned village using the same name, and came across a caravan that looked like it was in trouble after a certain member fell unconscious...

I'll dot for now, i've wanted to actually try this one, whats the current team layout if i may ask?

Also as luck would have it i already have a en minute background made up for the character i'm thinking of using...i've taken a recent liking to using the formula as a way of writing backgrounds now.

My base build is a simple one, Kitsune Spirit guide oracle/ Fighter. Going for kind of a divine archer type build, Either that or some kind of build involving using tails blades, kind of like a kungfu mist fighter thing.

At the moment, we have a Kitsune Oracle/Sorcerer.

...

That's it. o wo; Hence the re-recruitment.

Definitely dotting with a lore warden fighter/empiricist investigator

I've got this guy: Theoden

He was a replacement player for a game at later levels obviously so that's why he's 8th level.

So it goes without saying he needs some major mechanical overhaul. And I've got to find a way to get his backstory to make sense again.

I will try and get him put together by the end of the week but obviously if I do not then hey! that'll just give you one less pc to have to choose from! :)

Poor Shutai, left all alone...

Hey folks, this is Jon, and Shutai, the remaining character. Good luck to you all, and I look forward to playing with the best of you.

Would a Vigilante (magical child)/Bard be fine?

Would having two oracles or two kitsunes now that i think about it...be an Issue? i can find a different class if it is?

For now here is the backstory i'm going to do the crunch and reason for being in Brinewall finished sometime tommorow

But the gist of it is that she's at Brinewall becuase she's still running away from the events in the background, something along the lines of it happened a couple days ago

Background:

Appearance

Concept

1) Essentially she is an Anti-Nihilist, this means that she believes the world sucks, and that won't change unless someone goes to change it.

2)She spent much time outside in nature, specifically she enjoy's being around water, she grew up in a misty forest/swamp type area.

3)Her families death and her being driven out of her homeland has lead her to try and find a new place to call home.

4)Many consider her beautiful even by kitsune standards, although she has few if any people she call's true friends and tends to dismiss most people.

5) She want's to be seen as a hero, as such she helps people without generally expecting reward.

Goals

1)To be viewed by some as a hero, or be admired

2) To find a place to call home

Secrets

1) Kara knows she is being hunted by The man who killed her family, she does not know why. Her family as was renown as Hunter's.

2) What she does not know is her family hunted people remorselessly, hence why they were killed.

Relations

1)Ro'kurk Blood-Axe A half orc who lead the mob that killed her family. Kara's father killed Rokurk's Wife and son. He is hunting Kara, knowing her still alive.

2)Narine, a traveling nixie that Kara would play with when she was young. She often acts as a mentor, teaching Kara bit of magic or giving her information.

3)Kara's Father is the biggest influence in her life, he taught her how to fight and to respect nature.

Memories

1) I remember my training, it was hard. I was taught to be swift. Faster than the wind, more graceful than the waters. My fire needed to be better. Father wanted me to carry on the family legacy...

2) The water was cool, morning, mist covered the lake. I could see things below the surface, i dived in after to see what it was...

3) the fire and flames heated the air, shouts and noises. An angry orc cutting my family down. Men with pitchforks and torches chased me as i ran into the fog, A Tail Blade given to me by my father strapped on, my only protection ...

Background Story

I grew up in a misty forest, by a lake near a small town. I always wanted to visit the town but father always told me no, saying the forest was our home were we belonged. Father, Mother, everyone they would all leave on hunts, sometimes gone for days leaving me alone. I was to young to go with them.

It was during this time i met Narine, i was bored, sitting by the lake. I saw something underneath the surface swimming, So i dived in out of boredom. We swam back and forth, almost dancing. it became almost a routine thing, the two of us hanging out by the lake, Sometimes we would sing, other times play fight. A hobby i grew to enjoy.

I grew old enough for father to begin teaching me what he called the Art of the hunt, taught me about our peoples art of deception, why i was special. My fur always had been white, father said i had been blessed. Turns out i had been blessed with what he called the "Fox Fire" an innate connection to fire magic. He gave me a Tail blade, a series of metal plates and blades connected to my tail one of the few features Kitsune always possess even when in humanoid form. An odd weapon, but nonetheless the weapon of my family.

Alright, I think I have a good idea as to why Koharu is at Brinewall. Is it fine if we do a mock-up sheet here in the recruitment and post the backstory as well?

Kayin Ashok and Pazeek Splitbeak are available. Just need to have their relevant stats adjusted for the campaign's guidelines to be ready to go.

Pazeek encounters the caravan on the road, already intending to join them, as per his back story. He got held up ducking an ambush, and was delayed from reaching Sandpoint in time for the scheduled departure. Hearing that the caravan was already on the road, he altered his own course to intercept them at the first opportunity, which is at Brinewall.

Kayin, on the other hand, fell victim for his poor luck. His horse inexp!icab!y bolted not long after leaving Sandpoint with the caravan, leaving him miles away when it finally managed to throw him and his kitbag. Then a freak encounter with goblins further led him out of his way as he tried to evade the little pyromaniacs, eventually succeeding. With no other options, he sets out on the caravan's path after managing to return to it, hoping that some steady walking gets him caught up when they stop for a bit. Brinewall is his chance to successfully catch up.

Just realized that if Ammon's kitsune is chosen along with mine, fox oracle domination :D.

I'd prefer to avoid duplicating (non-core) races and classes. Variety is important - the reason for gestalt in a three-player game is allowing the team to diversify its abilities, and if everyone's doing the same thing, that's kind of... not helpful for the group as a whole. XD

heheh Love it.... The kitsune thing

I'll find a different class then something non oracle-y there are plenty of other classes for me to look at and i have time. honestly my only limitation is what things have obscuring mist and the ability to see through fog and mist. I might take a look on Shaman crossed with unchained Monk or some other Martial.

Either way i'm kind of sticking with this melee finesse Focus idea using A Tail Blade.

Dotting for sure. I'd probably roll something like a Bladebound Magus/Empiricist Investigator. Cover a bunch of skills and still be a decent mobile striker.

This is level 3 right? Do we still start with 150 GP?
Or do we run standard WBL?

I am think of doing a Unchained Monk//Empyreal Sorcerer. For utility spells and Wis SADness

Or U.Monk//Warpriest

How does gestalt apply to favored class bonuses?

Quote:
(with standard Wealth By Level)

@Sam: You get one FCB per-level, and only one class is favored unless you're a Half-Elf or otherwise able to pick from more than one. Gestalt is not meant to let you get more of something than you should normally have.

Do you allow any 3rd party? I was more or less asking about a feat called Deadly Agility from Dreamscarred

I think, think I have this right for now. Thoughts, GMRednal?

Appearance & Background
--------------------
Born in 4701, Koharu is the child of Lonjiku Kaijitsu and a mistress he refused to name from Magnimar. Unlike her half-sibling Amaya, Koharu is a full-blooded Tian-Min like her other half-sister (and idol) Ameiko. Only vaguely aware of Amaya and Tsuto though, she wasn't even properly introduced to Ameiko until she was 6.

With a zeal to have a good family, Koharu largely blinded herself to the troubles her father and half-brother caused, devoting much of her time to trailing Ameiko and playing with the other kids in Sandpoint. But with the attack of the giants on Sandpoint, something awoke in Koharu, a hidden power and desire to protect those around her. However, due to her age, she knew she couldn't out-and-out defend them. Lamenting her inability to help, she heard a voice from behind her in her hiding spot in the Rusty Dragon. Turning she saw a pretty little thrush.

The thrush spoke in Tian and said it's name was Mai and that it knew Koharu had within her great power. As the thrush spoke, Koharu felt a rush of arcane magic flow through her and her hair turned golden, her eyes shone lightly and she could see a mystical shield form on her left arm. Mai declared her to be the "Lovely Sun Princess", protector of those she holds dear. With this power, she dashed out and saved some from the giant's onslaught before finding a hiding spot and changing back to her normal self. Though most of the citizens wrote off the story of a cute and glowing girl with an aura of music about her saving them as those who were under stress by the attack, her story has only just began.

Koharu stands in at 5'4" and is thin in build. Wearing glasses and plain clothes normal to the region, her hair is worn in a long single braid until she changes and it curls gently. Koharu has taken to sneaking out at nights to help those in need as "Lovely Sun Princess". Ameiko knows that Koharu is sneaking out, but since the girl still seems so studious and withdrawn, all she can think of is that she is out staring at the stars since she seems to show no signs of being abused or anything foul.

Koharu's most precious possesion is her doll, that of a Tian princess. It is her mother's only gift to her, and Koharu only ever knew her as "mother", and knows she will most likely never meet the kind and soft-spoken woman again. Carrying the doll everywhere in some fashion, she has been teased about it but she dotes on it. Recently, she has acquired a new "pet" bird that Ameiko finds a fine addition to the Rusty Dragon due to it seeming to be able to sing along in it's bird whistles with her music.

After a possible lead on her mother came up, Ameiko sent the girl to Magnimar to see if she could become reunited with her mother. As the lead led nowhere, koharu returned to Sandpoint only to learn that in recent days her sister and some of her friends had gone far north to some old ruin called Brinewall. After a brief tantrum at being left out, she paid a crew of sailors a fair bit of coin and a promise of future trade deals hauling Kaijitsu glass to Magnimar (a lucrative agreement indeed) to take her to the place, intent on catching up with her sister.

.
What classes are currently in the campaign?
Where is the party geographically? I ask because if they are not in or near Tian Xia, I won't submit Tian Xia-themed characters.

Are the NPC romances still a thing? If so, any hints on what Ameiko might be looking for would be cool.

Is any 3rd party material allowed, specifically path of war? I was thinking Paladin//Ninja, but both dex to damage and trapfinding from normal rogue would be sorely missed. I don't suppose I can go unchained ninja and perhaps trade a poision use and/or a ninja trick for trapfinding?

Can we pick drawbacks for a third trait?

Oracle/sorcerer is the only remaining PC's gestalt, and the caravan is currently in Brinewall, which is in northern Varisia.

Thanks Sam C.
Considering where in the campaign the players are, and considering Brinewall's history, my character submission will be a gestalt from Occult Adventures.

Rebuilt Kayin as gestalt Fighter/Oracle that will eventually be a nasty combat maneuver type. Pazeek, still needing some work done, has been rebuilt as a Ranger/Unchained Rogue.

...It's always kind of amazing how many questions could be answered if people read what I wrote. *Coughs awkwardly*

Per the original recruitment thread, 3PP material is available on request. Things with Eastern flavor are preferred, since this is Jade Regent. Path of War (including its Expanded bit) is accepted.

Drawbacks for a third trait are fine.

NPC romances aren't really a thing because of the high turnover so far. Also, it's hard to do that sort of thing well in PbP.

I'm not commenting on the characters themselves until the deadline - I want to see the best submission you can create independently. ^^

Hi Rednal! Here's my submission. Akatsu is a samurai/Sohei/crusader. Still doing small updates until the deadline. How are we doing hit points? :)

Hit point are max per HD. I think it'll be needed too.

Rednal, I'm curious as to why you aren't doing the full background skill thing, but rather the +1 rank for a Craft, Perform, or Profession skill.

Because I started this before Unchained came out?

GM Rednal wrote:

Ah, makes sense.

I allways wanted to play jade regent ;)

I will probably submit a Miko ( Medium(kami Medium/ something with a bow(probably either rager or fighter)

Updated a little after reviewing much more thoroughly the character creation info. Still hope that I'm being considered!

Everyone is being considered until recruitment closes. Then everyone is reconsidered. XD And THEN I make a decision. I'm not even looking at your submissions too closely right now, because I want to try and compare all of them at once.

Dotting for sure. If vigilante is allowed I am currently considering the warlock archetype with kineticist focusing on a melee build.

The book is out (and I've got the HL files for it, even), so Vigilante is leval. ^^

Note, however, that it's very important to diversify your abilities instead of narrowly focusing on doing one thing well. I am FAR more likely to select characters with a broad set of talents.

Vigilante is actually up on d20psrd now too! Just a heads up.

As for Koharu here, she is rounded out to be a fighter with some spells and, with her gestalting as bard, is well rounded in skills and since she's going down the archetype of arcane healer she is also able to do some back up healing.

I just love the idea that since the group is heading to Tian-Xia to play up the anime tropes of a magical child as well.

Er, legal. >.> Cursed keyboard. *Shakes fist* But yes! I'm looking forward to reviewing these in detail. XD

Rednal, do you allow PC's that take Craft Wondrous to come in with crafted gear at reduced price?

When I say you should have wealth by level, I mean you should have wealth by level. I don't care if you buy it straight, craft literally everything yourself, some mix of the two, or say everything's an heirloom and you "happened" to have less cash than others for some reason. XD WBL for a third-level character is 3000 gold. Your sum total of gear and loose change, priced at full value and minus anything your class gives you for free, should not exceed that amount.

Understood sir.

Wasn't able to work on the actually crunch today as much as i wanted to , But i have decided to choose Shaman and Snake bite Brawler. Figured the seeing through mist and fog thing works well with sneak attacks and the martial half also gives a better Base attack bonus and a few other melee related things. essentially i have here a divine powered rogue like character.

Dotting interest

Crunch is mostly done. Have to math out my remaining gold, but other than that it's background time then I'm done.

@GM Rednal: as I am still deciding what to take as second class:
would a kami mediums Ofuda abilty affect all her spells or just her medium spells?
how strikt are you with the paladin code (espetially the Honor portion and a Medium chaneling a trickster spirirt)

Ofuda reads like it applies to all spells. Paladin codes can vary somewhat, but... well, Medium/Paladin might be a poor choice in general, because it would mean deliberately allowing a creature who might violate their codes to gain control over their actions, and that sort of thing ought to be a flat "no" to any Paladin. XD;

This was a way of the wicked submission for gestalt that I would use for Jade Regent with some minor background alterations, but otherwise pretty much the same.

This character is a gestalt fighter (unbreakable)|soulknife (cutthroat), made originally for a high-powered Jade Regent campaign that foundered when the GM ran into too much life. I'll have to trim out the mythic bits, fix his stats, and make a few other edits, if he's accepted. He's from a merchanting family; although he was born in Vudra he's been largely raised on the road. As for why he's in or near Brinewall, well, not every caravan gets through. He's been living off of the land and trying to reach a settlement while avoiding the Nolanders, but he's running low on arrows. Finding another caravan (particularly one with some friends of his family in it) is a godsend.

How do you feel about a Jinchuuriki, also known as synthesist summoner? Combining it with Ninja seems like the obvious choice, though that sadly leaves me without any maneuvers nor offensive magic which I feel would be incredibly fitting (along with mirror image). Steelfist Commando Warlord or Mystic or Stalker is another option that could work as a ninja replacement, probably picking up Elemental Flux somehow to work as ninjutsu. How would you rule full bab (like warlord) to work with synthesist (do you get the higher of two babs or the Eidolon's)?

Hello Rednal! I should actually have time to build a character for this recruitment, so I'm going to probe about a couple 3PP options again. One half of the gestalt is going to be POW:E's Mystic. For the other half, how about:

  • Survivor, from Amora Games' Liber Influxus Communis
  • Talented Ranger, from Rogue Genius Games' The Talented Ranger (I would then like to know about More Ranger Talents as well)
  • Talented Barbarian (same company and sourcebooks)
Listed in order of preference. Thanks!
