Kingmaker assist tools suggestion?

Kingmaker

Hey guys! So my players and I decided to start playing Kingmaker this week, I mostly DM with my laptop with Combat Manager and I from what I've read, Kingmaker is a bit harder to run due to it's higher complexity than most AP, so I'm wondering if there are any other assist tool/program/apps that I should look into for this AP?

When you get there - a kingdom building sheet.
The best I've seen thus far is the one Chemlak caretakes on these boards.
Sick & too tired to actually make the link sorry...but here's the address.

Here, let me help.

That's a direct link to the Excel version. There is an Open Office version, too. All feedback greatly appreciated, considered, and responded to (bugs a priority). Please use the thread Philip pointed to above, or PM me here.

Enjoy!

Damn, there is a lot of thing to keep in mind it seems haha Thanks for that, I'll look into it once the guys get to make their own kingdom!

Yeah, it's ultra hard to keep all the figures straight without some sort of calculator... (I've never managed it.)

I have a quick question about exploration and I don't really think it need a new topic so I'll ask away here. I'm wondering what to do if the party fail a skill check for hidden site during the exploration phase? Do you just tell me "Hey you missed something here, try again later" or just don't say anything and just tell them they can mark the hex as being fully explored? There is no mention of what to do if they fail a skill check in the book so I'm wondering how people handled it!

I tend to give suggestions if the roll is close enough to the DC ( say 2 points or so shy of the DC) so that Players may ask for specifics or mark the hex for later attention.
Another way this could be solved is by letting them through the hex only by later driving them back there by spreading rumours of what's in it or by giving quest with a target specificaly set in the hex (and pretending to make their reroll count but truly simply letting them find their mark).
TBH most rumours and side quests cover this aspect, allowing for a rather good number of reasons to go back where one group's already been.

I didn't give any hints.
Later on, whatever was in the hex would either be a boon or a bane... :)
Of course, my players had/have amazingly high Perception, so they didn't miss much.

If my players missed something, I also didnt give them any hints. But there are plenty of opportunities to inject rumors or other quests as was previously mentioned.

Heck, the module even specifically mentions some options like Pervilash and Tyg giving the party information, or the spider's nest having the map to the lightning struck tree, etc.

I'm a fan of the Kingdom Manager program, but then, I built it to run my own game. :) It covers exploration as well as kingdom management, foreign relations, and so on. I'm still adding to it - eventually it will cover mass combat, trade agreements, and have customizable data.

I would just let them think they explored the hex and move on. They may find out about it later from another source, as Curghann mentions.

But in practice, it probably won't come up unless you only have a couple of players. The DCs are typically not very high, and when you're rolling "best of 4d20 (or more) + modifiers", one of the PCs is bound to make the check.

Well I wish I could use that software Spatula, but asking people for "donation" to actually use the software in it's full capacity... well that's pretty shitty IMO, just sell it if that's what you want to do... But it's not a donation to help you support your effort if the "donation" is required to use the software, ain't exactly how things work mate, you want to make money out of it, don't hide your intention behind a "donation" requirement, just sell it... or give it away for free and request donations to those who want to do so, you can't have it both way lol

I would handle it like this:

-if it happens when they are low level, I would probably give them a hint that would make them look harder. I think its important to not make things too hard out of the gate (all bets are off later, as those who have read my posts know!)

-if it happens once the party is starting to get established with a couple settlements, I would have whatever it is (say a hill giant), show up and cause mayhem, scare farmers, etc whatever is appropriate as if it just popped up in their kingdom, because it sort of did. They expanded their kingdom around the encounter. Give the party a chance to respond without causing too much death and destruction.

-if it happens when the kingdom is say 15-30 hexes big, I would have the marshal's patrols or wardens scouts (they are doing that right?) run into the encounter. Likely they get their behinds handed to them or have a negative diplomatic encounter and now the party has to come fix it. Some mayhem and destruction should result.
