Stonetree instantly grew bored once the conversation turned to the magic properties of the chests. Instead he directed his attention to the table holding the wicker basic and glass jar. Stonetree wander over and started inspecting the table and items.

A faint frown tugs at one corner of Ansha's lips as she ponders what exactly each box does--or could do.

You know, between us, Chortles, one of us may actually roll high enough to figure something out. xD

Ansha thinks that the steel chest may have some sort of prestidigitation effect, but neither she nor Chortles can determine more than that, even with extended efforts.
Stonetree grows bored and begins inspecting the items on the table. When he reaches the wicker basket, he does not notice anything until it is too late. The basket conceals a small viper!
It lashes out and bites his hand as he inspects the basket, and he feels venom stinging in his veins.

"Nice shot," Ansha remarks to Chortles. The elf doesn't take a step closer to any of the objects in the room. "Anything in the basket?"

Chortles bows deeply towards Ansha swinging his hat wide as he speaks in elven, "Thank you, my lady. Tis an honor to be elevated by one such as yourself."

"The plague you say? What a relief my friend, I was worried there for a second!" Stonetree boomed while firmly slapping Chortles on the back "Bloody hell it is going to take more than a plague to take a Stonetree down."

Ansha laughs lightly in reply to Chortles. "Curulye lambëlye as nalye ninya, vélan. Mm, canasta uta ninya." She smiles coyly.
The elf looks to Stonetree. "...Isn't the plague usually contagious?" she asks in Common, frowning.

Is the jar of liquid open, or does it have a lid?
Ansha moves closer to the table, inspecting the jar cautiously--she's half-expecting it to jump at her itself.

Chortles tries the basket key in the red lacquered chest.

How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,

As Chortles inserts the key, this smooth, red lacquered chest looks devious. The solid metal plate surrounding the gaping keyhole pulses with glowing amber runes. Despite appearances, nothing seems to happen.

The elf gingerly touches the jar, then takes an experimental sniff of the liquid inside.

Ansha wrinkles her nose at the smell. The enchantress wraps her hand in the edge of her cloak, then extends her arm out as far as she can and tilts the jar upside down.
"Pretty sure this isn't water. Acid, maybe?" she says.

"Muscle for brains hasn't peed on the carpet in a while. He may be distracted from admiring his plague long enough to clean off your key..." Chortles flashed a wickedly innocent smile.

"All that talking must have made him blind" Stontree says to himself with a chuckle. He turns to towards Jivan and ask while directing his attention to the ceiling "Do you mind my friend?"

Ansha walks over to the red-lacquered chest and murmurs the words to a cantrip to read the spinning magical runes. (Read magic.)
"Perhaps a different key fits that lock?" she ponders aloud.

![]() |

Her mouth quirking into a mildly annoyed half-frown, the enchantress kneels down and takes a closer look at the runes. After a few moments, she stands again. "Jivan, try using that key on this box," she suggests.

DM PW, here's the quote from the PRD regarding Jivan's Basic Telekinesis power.
This ability is similar to mage hand, except you can move an object that weighs up to 5 pounds per 2 kineticist levels you possess (minimum 5 pounds), and you can move magical objects.

Ansha is suggesting that the key from the ceiling be used on the red-lacquered chest.

![]() |

So we have three chests (copper-banded wood, red lacquer, and steel) and three keys (ceiling, acid, and runes matching red lacquer chest). The rune key doesn't work in the red lacquer chest.
DM PW, is there a keyhole in the steel cube?

Theo held his elbow in one hand and his chin in the other, deep in thought. He was used to unraveling puzzles laid by deceptive politicians in the courts. This... was different.
"Stonetree, when did notice that key from the ceiling? Was it always there or did we do something?"
He nodded his head in approval of Ansha's suggestion.

![]() |

"There definitely seems to be an order to the way these chests are to be opened, then," Ansha surmises.

Jivan investigates the steel cube, which has only the faintest crack where its lid meets the base, and would be completely featureless save
for its narrow keyhole.
Ansha checks out the red-lacquered chest again and finds another key, this forged into the end of a jeweled scepter.
Sorry, I got carried away describing the key dropping from the ceiling to Stonetree, and failed to report there was actually another key inside the red-lacquered chest. So it's already been opened, but revealed two keys.

![]() |

Ansha purses her lips and retrieves the jeweled scepter from the red-lacquered chest. "Two keys, one keyhole," she muses. Shrugging, she touches the scepter-key to the steel cube, more or less at random.

Piqued, Ansha frowns. "Someone try a different key in the cube. Maybe this scepter-key opens a chest hidden in it or something," she says, waving the scepter around idly.

DM PatheticWretch |

The first key does not work, but as Jivan tries the second, golden key from the ceiling, there is an audible click.
A wave of magical energy escapes the chest, which does not seem to have any effect, save that Jivan and Stonetree have blue skin.
Still, the chest contains two items, a wand and the map of the Salhar burial vaults beneath Sothis. In other words, the item the Pathfinders had been looking for.
