The Exchange

The time of year is upon us again, and I am set and ready to get as close to a years' worth of video games as I can.

For the opening shot I got Valkyrie chronicles, for the handsome price of 5$. Doesn't get much cheaper than that, and the game seems like it could feed my inner XCOM demon for the next few months. I am also eyeing the telltale games prequel to Borderlands - but, I never played borderlands and so am no invested in the world, and I have reason to hope the game might return later in the sale for even cheaper, so I'm probably passing on this offer.

My wishlist? Well, there are all those nifty new RPGs that came out this year and they are most of the list. Divinity: Original Sin, Pillars of Creation, Numenara, Dragon Age Origins. There is also the Banner Saga which looks promising. Rounding up the RPG batch, I would pounce on a good deal for either the Game of Thrones or Walking Dead telltale games.

In other genres I am hopeful for Bioshock: Burial At Sea, Wasteland 2, Massive Chalice, Broken Age and possibly Alan Wake.

What are you guys and gals getting?

I'm hoping for Divinity: Original Sin to go on sale, and that's about it because I'm suuuuuper broke.

But! If the Banner Saga goes on sale, I HEARTILY recommend it. One of my favorite games to come out in the past few years.

Scarab Sages

Numenara isn't out yet, look for Pillars of Eternity, not CreationDragon Age Origins is not the Dragon Age game that came out this year - otherwise: great list! For now I bought Pandora: First Contact for a friend and Tales from the Borderlands for myself, I also bought le rest of the Space Hulk - Ascension DLC and the ancient Cinemaware anthology.

Scarab Sages

I'm looking for (probably to no avail) a decent sale on galactic civilizations 3. Other than that, Telepath Tactics is a game on my wishlist that I hope gets a decent (Read sub $10) sale. If Darkest Dungeon jumps under $10 I'll probably get it as well.

Banner Saga is a good play for sure, if not a bit hard and awfully short.

I might also get Borderlands Pre-Sequel so I can do like the other two games and get about 70% completion on it before I get bored with FPS's again :P

I might get Divinity: Original Sin. At least now I can try it for an hour and a half and if I don't like it, give it back.

Rynjin wrote:

You know, it's not a bad game, but I don't think it's really anything special. I've had it for a while now, started two parties, but have yet to finish it.

I'm waiting on Darkest Dungeons final release, it looks like a cool game. It would be nice to see Pillars of Eternity go on sale for a decent price too.

Rockstar is really emerging as the greedy a#%$$+!s of this sale.

I'd been planning to get GTAV for the summer sale, assuming it'd be about 10-20% off.

But no, its 25% off!

Of a newly raised price that coincidentally leaves it at the full $59.99 after 25% off.

I picked up some cheap games for like 5 bucks. Got the latest Naruto fighting game. Hate the anime, but the games are fun.

Y'all should get Payday 2 and play with me. I need a crew to rob some banks :D

I've got Pandora First Contact. Fun game. It's community driven which is good.

Coincidentally, a friend of mine won Payday 2 GOTY in some contest a couple of days ago and gifted it to me, so I have it freshly installed and haven't played anything besides the Safehouse tour.

What's your Steam username? Mine's the same as here.

My steam username is Charleston. Has Donatello from the 90's Ninja Turtle Movie as my avatar. I'm at school for the rest of the night though so I won't be home until 1120pm eastern time. I can play after that, though I understand if you don't want to wait and stay up that late :D

Eh. I don't sleep.

Scarab Sages

Got Outlast and You Sir are being hunted, as well as Wolfenstein Old Blood.

The Exchange

Snatched up Wold Among Us (which word of mouth tells me stands up to the incredibly high standard that The Walking Dead season 1 set) and Child of Light - a game I only heard of today but that I could instantly see that I want to play just by looking at the style and learning that it is a personal-journey driven RPG with a fairy-tail, magical vibe and beautiful environments. Both clocked in at just under 10$, which keeps my average at 5$ per game so far.

Bring it on, Steam, I'll handle whatever you throw at me :D

I liked Wolf among us even better than the Walking Dead games, the fairy tale/film noir mix is incredibly cool - but that is just a matter of personal taste, the stroytelling in both games is extraordinary!

Pillars of Eternity is on the Daily Deal right now for 25% off - a pretty good deal given its recent release!

Dal Selpher wrote:

It is indeed 25% off, but that's not a daily deal. It runs until the 22nd - the entire sale. Wait to see if it goes on sale for more, and otherwise buy on the 21st.

The Exchange

Woke up this morning to the Banner Saga. Got it plus an indie game called windosill.

Scarab Sages

Got 'The Banner Saga', too and an adventure game called 'J.U.L.I.A. among the stars.

The Exchange

Just remembered that Dragon Age is no longer on Steam, so waiting for a discount is silly.

Loot keeps on coming. Got Dead Space and Dead Space 2 in a bundle, and added Alan Wake on top. I remember dismissing the Dead Space games for years because of the scathing review on Zero Punctuation, but just about all other reviewers are agreeing that the games are awesome. I think the key is expecting an atmospheric action game rather than a horror game - fine by me, as straight up horror is a bit unpleasant.

Started playing Child of Light. which I only heard of the day I bought it. It's a nifty little game with a nice fairy-tale vibe. Beautiful environments and good gameplay hold this one together. I don't feel attached to the characters - but then, I never really sympathized with Red Cape either. That's not the point of a fairy tale.

I only wish that the collectible confession letters, which I think are important to the plot. would not be written in those damn poems. I just can't figure out what each confession tells me.

Anyway, probably going to get Deus Ex later today.

Scarab Sages

Dragon Age Origins is still on Steam, the ultimate edition has a 50% discount throughout the sale.

I quite enjoyed the Dead Space games - if you have a newer pc, there is one thing to do for Dead Space 1 - disable v-sync in game and enable it in your graphic boards controller software - the former to play without 30FPS limit, the latter to be able to walk through some of the doors that become blocked without v-sync.

I second the notion of getting Deus Ex (especially the franchise pack at an 80% discount...).

I bought March of the Eagles and realMyst - mastermiece edition, as well as a few missing dlc for Bioshock Infinite, Lords of the Fallen and Fable.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to do that :)

In my original post I wrote that I am looking for Dragon Age Origins, that was a mistake. Already played the first two, I'm actually looking to buy Inquisition - so that's a lost cause. I'll probably wait another year or so before getting it - what I saw of the game makes me think I'll enjoy it less than the first one anyway (tactical combat seems mostly gone in favor of an action RPG style).

So, my current cart includes:

Gemini Rue
Republique Remastered
Bastion
The Longest Journey + Dreamfall pack
The Fall
Dreamfall Chapters
Dust: An Elysian Tale
Invisible Inc.

Anyone played any of these and able to confirm whether or not I'm barking up the wrong tree? Gemini Rue, the Fall and Dust I'm pretty happy to take a chance on, since they're all $3 or less. Bastion is under $10, so I'm pretty sure I'll grab it. It's the others that I'm umming and ahhing about. Promised myself I'd stay away from Steam during this sale, suddenly I've got a $85 USD cart.

Have Bastion and Dust and both are definitely worth it. Bastion, especially. It's on my list of best games I've played. The music and narration are some of the best I've ever seen.

Rest I can't say sorry!

Fair enough, thanks for the info. I ended up grabbing them all, though I got Invisible Inc. through GoG since it turns out they've got a sale on as well and had it slightly cheaper, as well as having some other stuff I wanted...

On the plus side, I don't need any more games for a long time. That's not going to stop me buying more though...

Gemini Rue is awesome. The sci-fi noir atmosphere reminds me of Blade Runner and the old school pixel graphic put me in a nostalgic mood throughout. A bit like Beneath a Steel Sky, if you know that one. If you like the description of Geminie Rue on the store page and find the screenshots appealing, you will definitely love it!

The Longest Journey is frequently cited as one of if not the best point and click adventure. I am not sure if it deserves that high praise but it definitely is a good and LONG game, if a bit dialog heavy. Don't get me wrong, I love dialogs, but I also believe that brevity is the soul of wit.

I don't remember too many details about Dreamfall but I know I liked it back when it came out.

If I know Beneath a Steel Sky? I freaking love that game. Haven't played in well over a decade, but I've got it on GoG (I think it's one of the free games they give you when you sign up), and I think it's time for a replay! Anyway sounds like I should enjoy Gemini Rue... While I think of it, had you heard about the fact that they've announced that Beneath a Steel Sky 2 has been given the greenlight? They haven't said when it's going to be made, there may be another game or two between Broken Sword 5 and it, but it's going to happen.

Yeah I've heard nothing but good things about The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, except for a few complaints about obscenely obtuse puzzles, but that's part and parcel of the genre.

Scarab Sages

I was sad the other day when galciv3 was only 37.50 on the daily featured sales. Guess I'll pick 'er up in Winter Sale instead.

Thus far I have bought nothing. Probably won't now either, especially since 2AP books and Occult are next month here and Guild Wars 2 Expansion is $50.

Whaaaaert?! That's awesome! I thought they were only giving everyone the usual "yeah, wouldn't that be nice, some day, maybe" talk. Excellent news!

The idea was that if the Broken Sword 5 kickstarter cracked 1.5 million they'd do it. They only half that, but said they'd been inspired to greenlight it anyway, they just wouldn't guarantee that it would be their next game.

Got Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I think it's about time I play this one.

It's worth it, though I hope you picked up the directors cut that makes the boss battles less... boss battley.

Pathfinder Adventure, Rulebook Subscriber

Oh, did they actually fix that? I remember going the stealth route, avoiding every single guard and reloading whenever I triggered an alarm and feeling super ninja when I got dropped into a square room with nowhere to hide and a boss who was basically a giant with a minigun. Much dying ensued. Never finished the game because of that.

Lord Snow wrote:

It's not bad, but don't expect it to be like the first.

It's better than the original, you couldn't do this in the original.

Well they're still unavoidable out of nowhere and slightly frustrating boss battles, but the tiny rooms are made much larger, with interesting routes to lose the boss and use hacking, tech or stealth against them. The boss battles are still the worst part of the game, they're just not absolute rock bottom anymore.

In fairness, Gal Civ 3 33% off seems like a pretty good deal on a game that came out like two months ago.

So far I've picked up Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations and Wolfenstein the New Order.

Wolfenstein I'd had my eye on for a while, and has proved really enjoyable. I think it was 75% off.

Command is from a publisher that almost never puts stuff on sale and was an impulse buy. Still awesome though for what it is.

I'll probably pick up Pillars and Divinity if they go back on sale for the last two days even at 33%, but I'm reluctant to pull the trigger (especially on the older Divinity) for 33% before the last couple days.

Still waiting on some EU4 DLC to go on sale. Suspect it'll be along the back end. Also had sort of hoped to see Witcher 3 at more than 10%, but really I'm happy to wait months on that one. Maybe this Winter.

Fresh from watching Mad Max: Fury Road it was inevitable that Gas Guzzlers Extreme ended up in my library

I also picked up Bastion and Dust (Thanks Tinkergoth!)

Yeah, the version they had on sale was the director's cut. Didn't know what that means at the time of purchase but now I'm happy with it.

Well, never played any Deus Ex game, so that shouldn't be a problem :)

Yeah, I noticed, but it is still over my price range. I think I'll get the game next year, or the one after that.

In the meanwhile, turns out that gambling on prices dropping later in the sale paid off. Got season 2 of The Walking Dead for 6$ today (half the price it has at the first day of the sale).

Waiting for X-Com: Enemy Unknown to drop below 50%, though I'll probably snap it up anyway if it doesn't.

Score for another $15 off the complete pack.

I've had to cut myself off from Steam until the sale ends. I've got enough games to last me at least two years now...

Only two years? Lightweight! ~GRINS~

Sale is over! I mean, there are anchors but they are just repeats of previous sales so I'm done with it.

This year was very juicy indeed. I got 10 games:

1) Valkyria Chronicles
2) The Wolf Among Us
3) Child of Light
4) Windosill
5) The Banner Saga
6) Dead Space 1 + 2
7) Alan Wake
8) Deus Ex: Human Revolution (director's cut)
9) The Walking Dead season 2 and 400 days

All of these together total about 50$. I'd call that a worthy deal.

Now to see if I can possibly hold myself from buying all the awesome stuff coming soon at full price (Mass Effect, XCOM, Batman, Total War Warhammer...)

Scarab Sages

This Years games:
1) Grim Fandango
2) March of the Eagles
3) RealMyst
4) The Banner Saga
5) J.U.l.I.A. among the stars
6) Cinemaware Anthology
7) Primordia
8) Broken Age
9) Tales from the Borderlands
10) Game of Thrones (Telltale)
11) Hand of Fate
12) Outlast
13) Wolfenstein Old Blood
14) Lego Batman 3

Damn sales...

We would need decent payday first...

Relatively small haul this year.

1. Command: Modern Air / Naval operations - Pricy even at 50% off, but the developer almost never puts things on sale, and I'd had my eye on it for a year or so.
2. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowwind
3. Victory at Sea
4. Wolfenstein: The New Order
5. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
6. XCOM (all DLC)
7. Europa Universalis IV DLC (El Dorado)

Overall pretty disappointed in many sales compared to last year. I'd hoped to pick up Witcher 3 (would have gone in at 25%) or GTA V (since it came out two bloody years ago), but couldn't really commit to $50+ for games that are going to sit in my library anyway.

Divinity: Original Sin was another disappointment - I'd sort of hoped to see 50%, but I do note they dropped the price down to $39 base. We'll see.

Still waffling on Pillars of Eternity and Gal Civ III. 33% is a pretty good deal for a very recent game. We'll see if my willpower holds out.

I was wondering if I'm just misremembering. Many sales this year haven't been as insane as the years before, have they? For example, I got Deus Ex for ~3.5$ now, but seem to remember it was 2$ last year. No big difference and you won't hear me complaining either way, but it just seems a bit odd that the price actually went up.
