Legal Musical Instruments?

This may be too far into rules lawyer territory, but are there any restrictions on legal musical instruments for bards?

Particularly in Core Campaign?

Not sure what exists flavor-wise in Golarion, and I am hoping to keep things a bit canonical.

Trumpets?
Harmonicas?

Not looking to go the 80's hair metal route, but probably closer to that than a madrigal singer.

As long as it fulfills one of the established subcategories of Perform (Keyboard, Percussion, String, Wind), you should be good.

The skill itself lists harpsichord, piano, pipe organ, bells, chimes, drums, gong, fiddle, harp, lute, mandolin, flute, pan pipes, recorder and trumpet.

Trumpet should be a pretty standard wind instrument. Obviously there are such things as Trumpet Archons.

Honestly, if there is such a thing as sonar in Pathfinder, a Harmonica shouldn't be that difficult to imagine.

Pretty much everything other than a theremin should be ok, and they really need to include one of those in occult adventures for the sound effects...

Cool beans, thanks for responding! I hadn't thought to check out the Perform skill descriptions.

And I learned something new too! I didn't even know about the theremin until now.

Playing a vuvuzela is considered an evil act.

Best thing to do would be to look up the invention time of a musical intstrument.

Harmonicas were invented in France around 1820, so I don't allow them because they simply feel too modern for me in the default Golarion setting.

True fact: vuvuzelas are made from vescavor carapaces.

One thing you'll have to keep in mind, though, is that every musical instrument in Pathfinder is 5 gp and 3 lbs (unless it's masterwork: those are 100 gp and 3 lbs). Yes, according to the only mechanical rules for instruments, a grand piano and an ocarina are both 3 lbs.

I've been wondering, would tap-dancing shoes or ballerina slippers count as a musical instrument for perform (dance)? How about finger puppets for perform (oratory) doing story-telling?
