Say I have a level 11 cleric who tries to use Banishment, which allows me to banish up to 22 HD of creatures, on two succubi (each 8 HD) and a kalavakus (10 HD). Thus, I'm trying to banish 26 HD of creatures, when the cap is 22.
What happens?

I'm pretty sure the general rule about HD limits on effects like this is that they start with the highest-HD target they can, then work their way down until the next lowest target would put the total number of HD affected over the limit.
So, in your example, the kalavakus and one succubus would be banished, but the other succubus wouldn't be because there's no room left on the Banishment bus for her.

It's the other way around.
A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 HD of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell's point of origin are affected first. HD that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted.
I'd use this rule for banishment. The two succubi are affected, the kalavakus is unaffected.

Well then... that settles it as far as I'm concerned :)
I was just curious because spells like Symbol of Death, Hypnotism, Rainbow Pattern, Sleep, etc. all explicitly include that ordering. I figured I would ask here before I go bugging my GM with more questions, hahah.
