Advice and Rules Questions

In trying to maintain the same thread consistency with the other sandbox adventures that FGG has put out I've created this thread for SoA.

I've just purchased SoA and I was hoping someone here could help me understand the Getting Lost rules better. (Reference pg 13 - 14)

What I need clarification with when the PCs roll the d6 for every 5 miles of movement what are the rolling against? It doesn't really indicate what is considered success on the PCs part. I'm thinking that this d6 is actually meant to be a d20 Survival chk.

To further add to my confusion is that the DM makes a new roll every time the PCs enter a new hex. Success indicates they can move 50 miles in the desired direction without having to roll again. It seems that there is a conflict when and makes the roll to determine if the PCs become lost.

P.S to the guys at FGG: From what I've read so far great old school feel. Keep up the great work guys!

In Pathfinder. It is a survival check. Figure DC 15

Any stories yet?

No stories yet Bill. My group is not set to meet until February where we'll start off SoA. In the meantime I do have more questions for you. :)

So far I've been slowly digesting the material and I'm still in awe of how much you have written including all of your other material. Astounding. Anyhow to the questions:

SPOILER ALERT
Avert your eyes away to any PCs stumbling into this thread or may Tsathogga curse you with a green and slimy death.

Area SM-9-3 in the tower: When the trap is triggered it seems as if the whole staircase turns into a ramp and the PCs begin sliding down the spiral stairs. Is this true or is it just the section around the trapped area? (i.e. hole appears before the PC and they slide down the ramp found under the step)

Second in the cavern area below. It appears there is only one way out and that is through the trapped stairs? Does this mean that there is a way for PCs to discover the caverns without triggering the trap? Or does the way only open if the trap is triggered or from somewhere in the cavern?

Kayden's Swamp: It seems that you have missed something here. "Find the Wizard" is mentioned but no chart is provided that indicates where all the NPCs are at the time that the PC's find Kayden's mansion. You did provide one for Sorten's Tower.

Also in Kayden's Swamp you mention a Safe Path (pg 161 of PF version) but nowhere on the map does it indicate where this path is.

That's what I got for now.

SM 9-3--the whole staircase ramps

On Kayden's folks--just use the time of day and roll

Safe path is not marked--just assume they avoid any traps and encounters until they get to the cauldron area

Once again thanks Bill!

@Karmic Knight as to Survival rolls for Getting Lost if you want to set 15 as your base difficulty remember that "difficult" terrain (see Exploration and Movement) can add a +2 to the difficulty. Also, if bad weather is obscuring the sun and stars, it could add another +2. Better keep a druid or a ranger handy with the Know Direction spell, but even then if you don't know where you are going you are always lost.

Will be following for session recaps :)

@SoA - This adventure uses hex maps? Nice! I printed my map of the Rappan Athuk Wilderness and the Desolation on a sheet with Hex, easier than trying some photoshop wizadry. I need to check this out.

@Bill - Going to be running RA soon with the Kingdom Building rules, should be entertaining, great stuff!

Thanks James I'll definitely remember to add those into the rolls when necessary.

Regarding SoA and the hex map I purchased the Gulf of Akados region map (which for anyone running SoA is extremely helpful to understanding where places of interest are located as well as really being able to see the distance between cities, dungeons, etc).

Only problem is there was no player version. I ended up photoshopping a version my PCs can use provided they can find a master cartographer willing to sell them a map.

There is that Hexographer program. It's free and makes decent color maps.

I'm back.

So my campaign starts this Saturday and I've been going through the first section of the material. I noticed some holes that I'm hoping to have Bill or the other guys at FGG fill in.

Cerannan: In the main adventure synopsis section (p4 of PF version) it is indicated that Steve corrupted him, but it never really indicates how he was able to do this. Later on in the Shadow Plane chapter it makes mention that Cerannan went mad because he triggered a symbol of insanity. So did Steve lead him to searching for the artifact or was it the trapped spell book? I love understanding the backstory so clarifying this would be helpful.

Character Killing Session sub adventure: This is mentioned in the main adventure synopsis (p8 of PF version) and again mentioned chapter 2 but I didn't see this included in the PDF. Was this part of the KIckstarter goals?

Thanks,

kK

Character Killing session was a Kickstarter exclusive add on book (short module). Cerannan was misled by Steve to steal the book--it had the symbol inside.

Steve is almost a demi-god--he can corrupt anyone:)

Thanks Bill!

One thing that I noticed, is that this book is a pretty good line up for an Evil Campaign. This is one of those few campaigns where your characters can actually turn into villains which was a surprise. All in all this is a great adventure compared to many other ones.

Just got my hard copy yesterday - this is a beautiful book, and great adventure! I got the S&W version.

Had a quick question (spoilers, obviously), and wanted to make sure I was on the right track...

Spoiler:
The PC's are enticed to work for Kayden (either through Geas or other options), but Kayden's hideout just screams 'not a good wizard'. If not magically enticed, how would you play up Kayden being the 'good guy' that he thinks he is?

Hope everyone is getting as much use out of SoA as I am. I've thus far introduced the characters to Kayden who took them on for missions - pay equals spell scrolls and old spellbooks for the magic users. As for Kayden:

Spoiler:
I've played him up as a little creepy, but not overly evil. I have definitely made sure to introduce Steve however, and let the players realize there's a relationship there. Though, of course, Kayden thinks he's the on in charge.

So far, combining this with Stoneheart Valley has made for some great adventure material for the characters. There's so much to do.

I have a player who is interested in playing a Knight. We're currently based in and around the Starcrag Foothills region. Does anyone know of any knightly orders that would be present in that area?
