UPDATE
The voice over in the teaser is confirmed to be by Andy Serkis.
And it took all of an hour after that confirmation for speculation that Serkis is either the son or more likely a clone of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Palpatine.
Plausible, but since the Expanded Universe already touched on this, the movie may not take this route.
At the very least Serkis must be a member of The Imperial Inquisitorius.
"Nobody expects the Imperial Inquisition!"

So, let me get this straight. We're talking about a sword made out of light, right? One that erupts from a handle and magically stops about 1 - 1.5 m from the exit point of the handle? (Last I checked light doesn't stop until it hits something.) And this light can cut through anything? Easier than a piece of tempered steel?
And we're worried about the hilt?
Shouldn't suspension of disbelief have kicked in a few movies ago?
[edit: missed a word...]
A lightsaber utilizes a tightly curved flow of energy, similar to bolts from a blaster rifle, that is held inside a magnetic field. It's not made out of light.

Just in time for Iron Gods: Amiri's new sword

But nor is the lightsaber being made out of light. There's nothing in the movies that I remember about how a lightsaber actually works.
It's probably from the EU somewhere, but it certainly doesn't contradict anything in movie canon and provides a decent technobabble explanation.

Aside from the name. But yeah, a name is just a name. I was just looking for the source of the information. Having never read any of the books (which have supposedly been tossed in the bin) I'd never heard of any explanation of how a light sabre worked.
But the broader point, I think, is that Star Wars is a fantasy story. Nobody cares how Gandalf's staff works, its magic. I approach SW the same way. There's very little real science in it so why try? Sit back and enjoy the fun. Midichlorians were the worst thing that ever happend to SW. Leave the technobabble to Star Trek.

I like that this page remember the lightwhips! Want to talk about a weapon dangerous to the wielder O.O
My philosophy on the new Lightsaber....
1) Awesome!
2) Ever since Ep1 we keep getting new Lightsabers tossed at us. First the double bladed one, then Dooku's fencing grip style... This is just 'one more version'
3) Weapon evolution alone dictates that different people with different styles will use different weapons. There is no 'perfect weapon' for any collective group. Real world has taught us that.
4) Impractical is completely irrelevant. Only about 1/3 of a lightsaber combat is actual reflexes and hard taught skill... the rest is using the force. The force guides your attacks and defense and the more skilled you are in the FORCE... the less you have to worry about silly things like 'cutting yourself'. Again, See Darth Maul (or lightwhips...)
5) The more impractical a weapon looks.... the cooler it will be when the big fight comes up and major butt starts getting kicked!

Yep. I LOVE the EU. The X-Wing & Dark Empire series in particular. But saying goodbye to all that is worth not having to deal with the crap-fest that is the Yuuzhong Vong war and Legacy of the Force.
And based on the time line and the age of the actors, we would be dealing with Vector Prime if they honored the EU, since we're 25 years too late for the Thrawn trilogy.

I've been hesitating for some time about posting this and making a fool of myself, but... is this Smooth McGroove guy for real?
I don't quite believe that music is completely him. The percussion is too good. And the whistling is too perfect too.
And yet... I can't be sure. I keep changing my mind on the subject.

It's a LOT of takes, and he might use some auto-tuning. That doesn't mean it's not real. It's basically what Enya did 20 years ago, but covering video game music.

The only thing I wish they would have kept is the Thrawn Trilogy (is that the first one with heir of the empire and such) simply because of how historic it is.
It's that one series that turned the entire franchise on it's head, made way for a new enthusiasm for the Star Wars universe, reinvigorated the toyline and gameline, and eventually led to the prequels and such.
Which in turn, made it valuable enough for Disney to even consider buying, and thus by chain reactions, led to this New Movie.
Other than that, could care less about the EU.

"godawful" is too strong.
Definitely "wtf" though.
Oh, I'm not saying that I'd want to load this stuff on my MP3 player or anything. But it is pretty amazing.
I mean, is he really going that fast in this Kirby's Dream Land video? I'm thinking he sped up the recording.
And is he really managing those long, sustained notes in Donkey Kong Country? Again, I'm thinking technical tricks.
But maybe I'm wrong. Some of these videos have MILLIONS of hits! I never even heard of this guy until today! Now I'm looking at his entry in the wikipedia, and an article about him in Game Informer. I'm not finding any mention of whether he cheats, but it's still remarkable to see such dedication to such a niche subject. Maybe he really IS that talented.

There's probably some recording tricks involved in postproduction, yes, but he does do all the singing, whistling, and percussion vocalizations himself, or at least so he claims in his interviews. Hence why the videos are all fairly short or, in the cases of the longer ones like One Winged Angel, take quite some time to complete. (He didn't update for about five weeks before posting that one. And he's been quiet since posting it, which makes me think he's working on another big project.)
It's also why he says he prefers older songs - less audio tracks means a lot less work for him to emulate, as he has to perform each track individually, so he typically sticks to NES/SNES/early Sega systems/occasionally N64 and PS1 games and doesn't do more modern stuff.
Watch a couple of the interviews on his channel, he does go into a little detail about how he does it. Basically it involves a really good, fairly expensive recording setup, a LOT of musical experience, a LOT of time investment, multiple takes in some cases, and yes some technical know-how.
I dunno. I love video game music, I find myself listening to it far more than almost any other genre, and I think the guy's talented and makes stuff that's entertaining and pleasant to listen to. To reflect on your first comment, I have on a few occasions considered buying some of his albums and loading them up for listening; it's been more lack of spare funds than anything that's kept me from doing so.

They used to at least... I'm not taking anything for granted with a 20-30 year gap...
The only thing I really liked about the prequels (apart from Jedis being insanely awesome...) was seeing some of the evolution of how vehicles and armors evolved to what we know and love in the OT...

The teaser was good, not great.
Not enough lens-flares.
And I felt it had too few Gungans... it needed a whole planet of dead ones I think. That would've been great.
OOo! Storm troopers dragging dead Gungans to the edge of a mass grave...that would realy sell empire under new management.

True. New management might believe in multiskilled troops.

Easy peasy...omnidirectional vehicle inside shell with magnet at top to keep head on.
