Has the Beast Rider Cavalier Expanded with the Animal Archive

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I mostly play animal classes, so I decided to pick up the Animal Archive. Great book, full of all sorts of fantastic stuff. I have one question though, as a Cavalier:
Is there a place where the Beast Master Cavalier Archetype from UC got an expanded list of mount choices? There were a couple in there, like the Llama, that seemed like they would be perfect mounts, but it never gave a specific list. Does anyone know if the list has been updated since this, and other recent material (such as new bestiaries), has been released?
It's not the most optimized, but I think a Llama mount would be hilarious, especially with a circlet of speech, and I was wondering if such a beautiful thing was possible. I play mostly PFS, so that's also a factor. Thanks everyone!

Liberty's Edge

If anyone could at least let me know if I could ride a llama or panda in PFS as a Cavalier, that would be appreciated.

I don't believe the animal archive expands that at all. The best you can do is take the "Undersized Mount" feat from the Advanced Class Guide so that you could also take a medium mount as a medium race. Llamas and Pandas won't be legal choices for PFS as those fall under "Additional mounts might be available with GM approval."

Oh, well I'm small, so that wouldn't matter. Okay, I figured it wouldn't work in PFS, but it was worth a shot. Perhaps the list should be expanded with all of the new material, however. I really don't think classes like the Cavalier get enough love, so I would appreciate that.
One follow up question though: what's from stopping me from buying any mount I want? Aren't combat trained animals that you purchase just like animal companions without the special abilities (like share spells)? What's stopping from buying a llama or something like that? I'm not actually gonna waste my gold or time on it, I'm just curious.

You can buy any mount you want (as long as you have a legal source for it). It just won't level up as your class mount because it's not the class feature at that point. You could treat your mount as a pet (so it would be a combat pet) and then just have your bought-mount be the mount you use. The bought-mount would be a lot more likely to die, though, and you wouldn't get your +4 Handle Animal bonus against it as you do your 'class feature mount'.

ok thanks

If you aren't set on Cavalier, I believe the panda is a legal PFS choice for Druids (could be wrong, don't have my books in front of me). You could go Druid and simply ride your panda. Though I think the Llama is sadly still not an option.
I'd considered this very same thing myself. I was going to call my character the Legendary Llama-rider of Lastwall. Sadly couldn't get it to work in PFS as a scaling companion.

If you were a medium beast-rider, this would apply.

In addition, a 7th-level or higher Medium beast rider can select any creature whose natural size is Large or Huge, provided that creature is normally available as a Medium-sized animal companion at 7th level (like a bear). To generate statistics for such a mount, apply the following modifications:

Size Large
Ability Scores Str +2, Dex –2, Con +2;
Increase the damage of each of the mount’s natural attacks by one die size.

So you could ride a llama if you were medium as it is medium at 7th level and then you could turn it to large with the above rule. Also, "panda" could be a bear pet so that's legal as long as you treat it as a bear (again with the above rule). (and a panda is a bear so that's fine). Unfortunately, there's no similar ability for small riders as their list is explicit instead of vague like for medium.

Oh, I'm already a level 4 cavalier, but I can change my mount at any level up as a Beast Rider. Thanks for the advice though, I'll probably be building a druid soon!

And, once again, I am small, so I can't do the medium sized thing. I like having a mount I could take anywhere, as opposed to having a large mount. within a few levels, I'll have a velociraptor, so that'll be fun. Hooray for Halflings!
