resurrection in ustalav

Sovereign Court

Hi all
i opened this thread to understand how is the common behavior about getting PC resurrected in CC campaign.
First of all, the spell needs a 12 lvl cleric, and as far as i know, there is only the Pharasma priestess in Caliphas able to do this (but i can be missing something).

Ravengro, Lepistad, Ardis, not one single city has a 12 lvl cleric available, not mentioning costs and such.

so wondered what you did in your campaigns if a PC died

I'm assuming that you're in a situation where raise dead (which only needs a level 9 caster) won't do. Sadly, resurrection actually needs a level 13 caster, since it's a level 7 spell.

According to Rule of Fear, level 7 spells are available in Lepidstadt, in addition to wherever else you might place them in your campaign. If a raise dead will do then you have other options, too.

thanks thug, for amending my mistakes.
yes, my party was out of reach for the raise dead spell.
4 dead, 1 fugitive.
the other 2 left couldn't lift 4 corpses in time to reach Ardis.
So i assumed that ardis was harboring "7th" lvl casting.
It's also possible they used scrolls, even if it's really a stretch.

that's putting me in a weird situation. the ones that were left didnt actually knew that ardis hadnt a cleric able to do that.
they "assumed" it and i went along without much thought.

it will be a lesson for me next time.
more preparation will be needed...

As a group we dislike resurrection of any kind so when a PC dies we bring in a new PC. That said we also use hero points so if a player is clipped in a moment out of their control, they have a resource to keep that character in the game. A resource they still have to manage. We completed CC a few months ago and every PC had died and been saved by hero points at least once if not several times. Only one of the original PCs didnt make it to the end.

It's not unreasonable for a wandering cleric to have been stopping over in the old capital city. Ardis normally has level 6 spells available, so temporarily providing level 7 spells in order to allow your campaign to continue seems completely reasonable.

My game starts next month, and I'm going to emphasize that resurrection is difficult to get, and subtly suggest that the party have a good supply of gentle repose easily accessible, however they want to do that.

Good luck!

Sovereign Court

thanks all :)

Where is this Rule of Fear book?

Rule of Fear

Something I have wondered about in relation to this question.

Does anyone know Pharasman Priests' stance on using these spells? Pharasma is the dominant religion in Ustalav and recently when I lost a PC I started to wonder... Would a Pharasman actually cast raise dead?

Is it not against Pharasma's doctrine to allow someone to return to life that has been rightfully killed?

What is everyone else's stance on this? Is there an official stance in one of the books that I have missed?

Dead people who can be raised to life have not yet been judged by Pharasma, so she’s cool with Raise Dead, etc., and so is the Pharasman church. After all, it’s just a temporary reprieve...sooner or later, they’ll die and face judgement. Undeath is a different matter, an attempt to evade her judgement for all time.

This is spelled out in the article on Pharasma in Trial of the Beast.

In my game, Ustalavic peasants are superstitious about people raised from the dead, suspicious and wary. Those that have been try to keep it quiet, and if they can’t, sometimes they’re driven from their homes to start over where no one knows their story. Also, many faithful Pharasmans, especially Penitents, choose not to return when someone tries to raise them.

remember that is always a choice as KCandC says.
So the friends can just give it a try and resurrect/raise, the deceased always has the chance to say "no, i will not come back".
i suspect many pharasma believers will say this
in my campaign the 4 ppl that died were "asked" to finish what they had started by a messenger of pharasma, when they were in the process to be resurrected
