How does a new deity create its church / religion.

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

IF a pc passed the Starstone test and actually managed to ascend (Anything is possible yes?) I guess you bob up cork like to your aligned plane...and then what? How would you create your religion and develop your church? Gain worshipers? I don't have ascension dreams at the moment, but I'm curious.

Does anyone have thoughts on this? (If this has been covered already, my profuse apologies)

Honestly, I have never considered this before. I would say the first step would be to determine your portfolio, what are you the god of and what domains do you represent. After that, you need to attract followers. Appear before a few beings and perform minor miracles, etc. Once you have enough followers, your church can form. As the size of your church increases, your power and the power of your priests will increase. Of course, this may attract unwanted attention from other gods and possibly conflict. Have fun.

From what the James Jacobs has said you start and spread your religion like any other. Talking to people, missionaries, and deeds. For instance bards where very integral to the early proliferation of Cayden Cailean's faith.

So you're a new deity. What is the first thing you'd do? Would it be kick the ass off the neighboring country, the one that threatened your hometown your entire mortal life? Create food out of mid air and give it to the homeless? Create a disease that wipes out a particular kind of monster? Keep bears safe from hunters? Find a bunch of bandits and bring them to justice? No matter what you do, someone will notice. You're a freaking deity acting the in mortal world. Someone will notice and think it is a good idea to be on your side or to be not have you against them. They will thank you for the help, worshipping you out of thankfulness or beg you not to hurt their people again, worshipping you out of fear. Then you have worshippers.

That was pretty much my take on it as well. As my home game group is about to experience mythic ascension a couple of them have made noises about divinity and I wanted to have other ideas from my own. Sometime just throwing subjects out on the board gives me really useful feedback and new angles to consider. My own pc's get into enough trouble. I think any one that was GM-ing in a game that I was playing in would holy blue bolt me for the safety of Golarion.

Dale, I love your Book of...series. Thumbs up.

Thank you. I always love hearing when people enjoy our work.

A new deity might also get a little attention by cursing/blessing a few oracles.

Come to think of it, that's actually a cool backstory for an oracle. Being the first oracle of a brand-new deity virtually unknown to the world.

“Joe as the light glowing from my eyes and the Headpiece of Frinn indicates, I am now nearly omnipotent.”

“Oh, Yamara! That’s terrible! And it struck you at such a low level of experience..

“I need your help, old friend-“

“Of course! It must e such a burden- We can perform a divination to determine the proper penance and quest to restore you to your normal—“

“Don’t be a sap Joe. I need our business finesse. I’m a demi-goddess now—How do I get clerics, temples, reliquaries? Y’know, the Good Stuff!”

“Yamara… let’s discuss greed." *face in hands*

Ah Yamara! My BF and I were just laughing about the headpiece/nose pieces/etc. of Frinn a few days ago.

Here's what you do:
You have some sort of Messiah. An oracle, a mortal friend, your own child, some random dude in the desert. When it comes time, appear to them in some epic, godly way, and explain that they will be the herald of a new order. Give them your godly commandments. Write a "Bible" of sorts, and give it to them to read from. Give them the voice to parade in the streets with your word. Give them the strength to smite the enemies of your faith.
Then, when it comes time for them to die, give them the most epic and wonderful passing ever, in a proud showing of what your faith can do.
Followers will come, and your edict will spread.

I think picking a Herald is the first order of business (you know, a manager). Cayden picked one of his besties, and I bet that's how many new gods roll.
