Legacy of the Stonelords PLAYER QUESTION

GM Discussion

Dark Archive

We have a group of six level 8 characters.

There are two tiers for Legacy of Stonelords: 7-8 and 10-11.

How hard is the scenario? Can we realistically play up, or would that be suicide?

NOT looking for spoilers, obviously. Just trying to decide where we'll have the best time. We're a group that comes to Gencon together and plans meticulously.

Not sure on difficulty, but if you have 6 players that are all level 8, then you have no choice but to play subtier 7-8 due to APL.

Yeah, you can't just choose to play up. Your Average Party Level determines what subtier you play, in this case 7-8 will be where you'll be marshalled.

I misspoke. It appears we'll have three level 8s and three level 9s.

If anyone knows a bit about the scenario, what can you recommend?

Ok, a quick review of the rules reveals the stupidity of the original question I asked. It's clear that if the APL is in between sub-tiers, we have to play up with the party of 4 adjustment.

Meh. It was a new rule they inserted in last year. If you don't play but really as a group at GenCon, it's very easy to overlook as you always had options before if you were in between tier like that. Not a stupid question at all, but you are right you will be playing up with 4 person adjustment based on your clarifications.

3 L8s and 3 L9s is APL 8.5; you can choose to round that down to 8 (and play subtier 7-8) or round it up to 9 (and as a party of 6, play subtier 10-11).

To my knowledge there is no 4 player adjustment, so playing up may be more than you bargained for.

Yeah, no 4 player adjustments for the specials. Also, the in level threats are pretty challenging from the subtiers I've looked at, and the specials as you may know are a test in endurance, more so than most PFS scenarios. So I guess the choice is... How confident/cocky is your group... ;)

Pretty confident generally... but not looking to court death. At least one guy in the group (me!)is an extremely squishy bard (knowledge specialist).

A TPK at the Con would sort of kill the buzz, you know??

Thank you for the input. I look forward to further (spoiler free!) insight into where we'll have fun.

Keep your thoughts coming!

Yep, there's no 4-player adjustment. If your party includes people whose level fits into one of the tiers, I would recommend that you play that tier, in effect forcing the level 9s to play down. Otherwise, the level 8s would be getting a chance to play up that would not normally exist.

In cases where there is a party of all level 9s, and so the party genuinely falls between tiers, I'd recommend playing down with 4 players for sure, and would say that even with 5 or 6 players, playing up should be handled with extreme caution. Tier 10-11 is...not nice.

Tier 10-11 was wonderful for my party of 2 pounce eidolons with summoner attendants, a paladin, and an inquisitor....

I damn near killed my VL's barbarian multiple times, and the poor sandman bard took 8 Con drain in a single action.

Tread not on sub-tier 10-11 lightly, friends. Go hard, or go home.

If you fall exactly at 8.5, and get the choice to round to 8 or 9, then unless your characters are quite optimized, I do not suggest trying to play sub-tier 10-11 with this group.

Just ask Majuba.

Liberty's Edge

I'll agree with the above posters....even an optimized group can have issues in the special this year. I played with a group of optimized players (we were missing a healer), and we had a rather quick death in part 1. That player was a bit more cautious the rest of the encounters... On a side note, almost one-shotting the bigbad on my wasp rider was awesome.

in the GM prep thread it says that at con's there will be no APL9 tables
