One thing I always hate is when I create a druid or ranger or whatever and take my wolf form, or bring out my pet wolf, or summon my raven or whatever have you and I hate the way it looks. Not only do I hate the way it looks but it has the same appearance as everyone else running around with the same pet/wildshape ability.
I like to spend a considerable amount of time in animal form. If I've got some kind of animal I have it out pretty much constantly. These are major parts of your character that you are constantly using and constantly seeing.
It doesn't make sense to spend a great amount of time allowing players to customize their armor and regular appearance and then have them running around in the same wildshape form as every other druid or using the same pet as every other druid.
So from the bottom of my heart, please let us customize our wildshape forms and companions.
*If we have to tame our companions just having a nice visual variety to the tamable NPCs works.*

Yeah, I'd like to be able to at least mess with some colors and the sort.
Also, a side idea: Wild shape should have items required, like monks' unarmed strikes, right? What about making it the hides of various animals, kinda selkie-style?

I hate to do this to you, andius, I really do. Especially considering I agree. Really. However...
"Dude wouldn't it be cool if...?"
The way I've heard that phrase is:
"Dude wouldn't it be cool if...?" = Everyone does that thing.
In terms of customizing wildshape appearances and animal companions I would would hope everyone would.
I don't see the downside to that happening. I imagine people's wildshape/companion appearances will end up as varied as those of their characters and I think that's a good thing.

Provided any customization didn't require additional animation work I think this would be fine. There'd be some additional development to build the actual customization interface options, but that shouldn't be as big an issue.
That said, IF something like this was introduced then NPC animals of the same type(s) should have random customization applied to them. If all the 'monster' wolves looked the same then any customized wolf would be obviously another player or their 'pet'... and some people would then 'customize' their wolves to blend in with the 'monster' version. If the variations exist just apply them to all versions of the same critters.

Yes, wildshifting into a random livestock animal in order to scout out a settlement has always been my druid's favorite tactic in PnP D&D and it would be great to see it become possible here. HMMM how about a Neutral Evil Druid Sheep Assassin? Use Disguise to emulate and blend into a sheep herd, then spring out at night and take down the town's mayor as he walks by the pens? =P
