Question about drawing maps

GM Discussion

Hey guys, I'm new here and didn't see anything similar after a small search.

Anyways I'd like to know if I should be drawing maps as larger than they are shown in the campaign books. For example I have a map of the Thistletop Stronghold in the first part of the Rise of the Runelords campaign and there is a room that is about 8 tiles in total, and there are about 6 goblins in there with only one entrance, it seems like such a small room with so many targets would be a pain for my PCs to deal with.

Should I draw the room as larger than it's shown, or maybe find a way to have them fight them elsewhere?
Any answers would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Make sure to check the map scale. Some maps, especially those found in AP's or modules, might be drawn in 1 square = 10 feet scale instead of the 1 square = 5 feet scale for tactical play. Generally, go with rooms are they are mapped out in the products if you're running for Society games. For home games, feel free to change things around.

Fighting in tight spaces is part of the game. Squeeze em in there!

They're definitely 5' squares.

Spoiler:

Note that, the 6 goblins are only in this room if the alarm hasn't been raised and they're still sleeping. If the alarm has been raised they're in room C11. If they're sleeping, the PCs will probably get a round or two to start massacring them, more if they're stealthy. Or, they could just spike the door shut if they're not into murdering things in their sleep.
