That's where the difference lies, though, Alleran. The Great Old Ones of the Call of Cthulhu RPG are just that - inherently unstoppable forces, where your only options are to prevent their appearance.

There's a story around about a guy who "won" Call of Cthulhu, for a given definition of winning. Old Man Henderson, if you're familiar with it. Good stuff.

Anyway, that just goes back to what started this thread: "This kind of bothered me though. Why? Because the Great Old Ones are supposed to be unimaginably powerful. Pretty much unstoppable. The problem is, with the write up, they can be stopped."

Basically, which theme one prefers.

My specific quibble was with using Conan as an example of "you can kill them" - because it is not, strictly speaking, the case. Conan knew when to back off.

His CR places him out of reach for even 20th level PCs.

I disagree, but that's better suited to a topic discussing the mechanical problems of high-level play and the CR system rather than this thread, I think.

Unsurprising, really. Even Rovagug, terrible as he is, is a provincial little destroyer-god trapped on a backward planet lost in the backwaters of a drab little galaxy in an out-of-the-way dimension. Not that his tendency to shred reality isn't cute in its own self-absorbed little way. He may even be allowed to stick around as somebody's house-pet.

Yes. Please continue to spread such foolish ideas. It will make the Rough Beast's ascension that much easier. For he is god of the qlippoth, and lord of the deep abyss.

For myself, I like the way they are presented. It makes for a good counterpoint to the planar beings that generally top the CR scale. I've never been a fan of inevitable doom, you are less than worms, etc. First, I don't think it's true. Second, it isn't enjoyable for me.
