Strategy Mini-game Possibilities

3.5/d20/OGL

Hi there friends,

I'm new to GMing, and am running my first (mostly) homebrew campaign.

There's a large battle coming up between two groups of NPCs. Rather than have the PCs carve off a small chunk of the enemy force and influence the battle that way, I'd like to have them take control of the friendly NPC force and move them around like a strategy game.

Any advice on how to make it deceptively easy, fast and fun? I should probably know more about war gaming but alas, I skipped that stage of my education.

Obviously this is not the ideal system for large-scale strategy! I just thought it would make a fun mini-game to add variety to the campaign.

Thanks in advance for any time you spend on this topic.

Ultimate Campaign has rules for mass combat:

Quote:
Mass combat rules to help you lead clashing armies and conduct epic battles in a fun and efficient manner—without losing sight of the PCs themselves.

The PDF is very reasonably priced, if all you interested in is the mass-combat rules.
