I've not once been upset or angry in this entire conversation until now. Aratrok knows and has known my gender for a long time, and it makes me angry to have you sweep aside his commentary on the subject as "white-knighting". I'd appreciate it if you didn't do that again.
I apologize- to both of you. But you should know that this does still occur- somehow having a female avatar makes people defend your posts. Odd, but it's still a fact of life on message boards.

Apology accepted and thank you. :)

I often view the alignment nature of spells as a part of the odd nature, that is magic.
Outside of what is normally considered a good, or evil act, magic becomes an act of such a nature by simply being what it is.
Like much of what happens when magic is used, the logical mind cannot fully comprehend it.
The laws of the universe are set aside in the realm of magic.
Intent is meaningless to effects of magic.
Magic is mastered by few, and understood by even less.

I mean, didn't he sweet in and position himself as the new deity of the people who formerly worshiped Aroden and establish himself as the patron beneficiary of those people?
It's a bit more complicated than that. It wasn't just a case of Aroden gone and Asmodeus in. And in fact that's not the case now. In fact most of the lay population who worshipped Erastil and Abadar continued to do so and passed that on to their descendants. Aroden seems to have mainly been a devotion of the old Cheliax nobility. In fact, it was the loss of Aroden's divine mandate that put King Gaspodar in a weakened position as his nobles challenged him for power.
Asmodeus initially was the patron of the Thrune faction which entered a deal with devilkind and was able to strategically settle the seccession wars. So since the House of Thrune has placed it's people in peonage positions of power, Asmodeus has become the go to diety for the nobility, who set the laws that the rest of the population must abide by.
It did not settle the matter for all of what had once been Cheliax. Present day Andoran and Galt broke away from Cheliax during the decades of conflict.
