Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

1) Seoni uses her power to discard a card for d10 instead of strength. It says it counts as playing a spell. So if the card I discharge is a spell card, can she automatically recharge it? (I think answer is no)
2) Lini discards a card to do her roll d10 rather than strength. It's an animal, can she recharge it? (I think no)
3) Valeros defeats a chest barrier and gets to put 4 random items in his hand. Unfortunately, he has no way to explore again and he has 8 cards (the 4 he had originally were weapons). Can he keep his new cards and recharge his weapons? (since he has the power to recharge rather than discard weapons) (I think answer is also no because he didn't play the weapons).

If the answer to #3 is no, (which I'm sure it is), that sure nerfs the chest's rewards.

1. You mean Arcane + 1D6 for her, but if you discard a card to activate a power, you can't then do anything else with it. So no recharging either by her power or the card's recharging ability. Same thing with #2.

3. The idea is that you keep exploring and maybe use one of those weapons, but the main goal is to get better cards for your party down the road. So, even if you have to discard a couple of cards, you're ideally getting better cards. And it sure beats the hell out of a Horde or Collapsed Ceiling or even worse the Explosive Runes. Again, Val's power only triggers when you reveal a weapon which only happens on a Combat check so the extra cards go to your discard pile.

Kysmartman has answered your question (as did you) but I thought I would add the following.

Lini can use her power ("You can reveal an ally with the Animal trait to add 1d4 to your check") and reveal the Animal Ally before discarding it to gain an additional 1d4.

Duh - Why didn't I think of that. We've always been discarding first and if we don't have a second animal, we'd lose the d4.

So, just to be clear here (and make sure I'm not missing something), the only time Val's recharge really comes into play is if he discards a weapon to get the extra plus-up, then he can recharge it (and if he discards something like the dagger to add to another weapon check, he can recharge it). At least, that's how I see it with the cards we have up to this point (don't have Skinsaw yet).

Not sure if this is the same as you're saying but the way I see his power ("When you play a weapon, you may recharge it instead of discarding it") is that whenever Valeros has more than one weapon in his hand, then use the "discard" bonus of the weapon. It's a good way to cycle through your deck without losing "hit points".

As Dave Riley correctly pointed out, the following is incorrect as I forgot that the Battered Chest barrier is not a Combat Check. Oops :)
In your situation with the Battered Chest and four weapons in hand, you knew that you would most likely defeat the barrier and therefore would gain 1 or more Items (therefore ending up with having to discard cards during the Reset Your Hand step). Revealing and discarding a weapon (which gets recharged), revealing and discarding a Dagger (which also gets recharged) means that you will most likely make room for the new Items you can expect to gain from the Battered Chest.

The answer to all your questions is no. The rules for recharging a discarded card require that you use a power on the card, in a situation where it's appropriate to do so. Val can't recharge a discarded dagger unless he discarded it fighting a monster. Lini can't recharge a discarded Dog unless she used it on a Perception check or for an additional explore. Seoni can only recharge Detect Magic if she used it to look at the top card of a location deck.
