Witch Familiar Question

Rules Questions

Probably a no brainer question to everyone, but I am trying my hand at casters for the firs time and a witch seems the most like what I would want to play. Anyway, for my question, in the section on witch familiars, it mentions:

Someone said wrote:
A witch must commune with her familiar each day to prepare her spells. Familiars store all of the spells that a witch knows, and a witch cannot prepare a spell that is not stored by her familiar. A witch’s familiar begins play storing all of the 0-level witch spells plus three 1st level spells of the witch’s choice. The witch also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to her Intelligence modifier to store in her familiar. At each new witch level, she adds two new spells of any spell level or levels that she can cast (based on her new witch level) to her familiar. A witch can also add additional spells to her familiar through a special ritual.

Does this mean that a witch gets additional spells that they can cast (outside of their class and intelligence modifier allotted spells) or does it mean something else?

Again, my apologies as this may be a no brainer to folks, but I am still trying to wrap my head around it.

Pretend the character is a wizard and the familiar is a spellbook.

It pretty much operates just like that.

Never played a caster, so that doesn't mean anything to me :(

You get your number of spells per day from your int and class level. In order to prepare your spells, you have to commune with your familiar. You don't know your spells on your own and if you lose your familiar, you can't prepare spells until you get a new one.

Wizards write spells in their book and have to study the ones they want to prepare each day. Same idea, lose your spell book and you can't prepare them the next day.

That makes sense. The one question is brings up to me, however, is the following. It says:

Someone said wrote:

So, as a level 2 witch with a Int mod of 4, I get 4 0 level spells and 3 1st level spells. Looking at the bold part above, does that mean that I store an additional 4 1st level spells in my familiar too? If so, are those also spells that I can cast? If not, what does that mean?

I hope my question makes sense...thanks for the responses!

What you quoted was from the Witch's Familiar section. This is your spells known. It is the number of spells stored in her familiar when she is first created as a first level character. She also gets 2 more for each additional level. She also gets Patron Spells on every even level. Any other spells she wants must be added to the familiar per the Adding Spells to a Witch's Familiar rules.

What you can cast is based on the Class Skills table with bonus spells based on your Int (your casting stat) in the Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells.

Alright, this is starting to make more sense. Thank you for the feedback! This should be, hopefully, my last question...does this mean that, as a 2nd level witch with an int modifier of four, I can prepare 7 (3 for my level/mod bonus and 4 more for the int modifier as bolded above) spells each day, but only cast 3 of them?

No. It means those are the total spells you have mastered, like a wizard. Like a book wizard you can only cast what you prepare.

Ok, let's see if I got it this time!

So I have mastered those 7 level 1 spells (three 1st level spells of the witch’s choice and a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to her Intelligence modifier which is four for me) and they are stored in my familiar? Of those 7, I can only cast 3 each day once I have prepared them?

Your familiar knows some spells. At 1st level it knows all 0th level spells and some 1st level ones. These are your choices for your spell slots. So say your familiar knows as 1st level spells:
-----
Enlarge Person
Mount
Obscuring Mist
Ear piercing scream
-----
If you have 3 slots, each slot can be one use of any of these spells. You can even prepare the same spell multiple times. The next day your slots refresh, and you can change those three. You can teach your familiar new spells at each level, and by feeding it scrolls (from the witch's familiar description).

Extra tip: You can leave slots empty, and fill them up with 10 minutes of preparing later in the day too

Almost--

you can actually cast and prepare more than 1st level spells per day:
you get extra from having a high intelligence modifier
So in your case you can cast 3 1st level spells per day (2 from being a witch and one extra from your high intelligence score).

Math error:

Witch 2nd level gets 4@0/2@1. Bonus 1st level spell makes that 4@0/3@1.

ingenuus had it right.

Yay, I did something right!

Anyway, thanks for all the responses everyone...I have FINALLY been able to wrap my head around this. I greatly appreciate it!
