I really enjoy this game. MUCH MUCH more then I enjoyed AC3. Sailing is wonderfully done, and the sea looks amazing. Story is not bad either.
The protagonist is a little unlikable, but then, the dude is a pirate. Pirates were monsters.
Also the sea shanties. Ah, the sea shanties. Beautiful.
And, the music in the game reminds me a lot of Firefly. Especially the more action-y tunes.

I too am enjoying the game. Loved AC3, though it felt rushed. This one feels like they took their time. LOVED the fact that there was a Maroon Assassin in it- dressed very much like a slave in assassin's robes, my wife was mystified, but I could feel my ancestors approval. Great, great game so far, wife is going for 100% like always, and I primarily just watch her play.

Although it wouldn't kill them to use a woman as a protagonist for once...
I think one of the bonus packs you get with the PS3 or PS4 version has a female protagonist.
I have it for PS4, not that far into it but really like it. I played some of the very first AC and lost interest quick. This is first AC game since.

I recommend starting with the legendary ship in the lower right corner of the map as it is definitely the easiest of the four followed by the upper right one. I was able to beat both on my first attempt with a fully upgraded Jackdaw.
The ones on the left of the map are extremely tough and will require a lot of trial and error to learn the tactics necessary to beat them Lower left is particularly frustrating, having invulnerable sides and a powerful mortar making it difficult to get at the ships vulnerable stern (took me over an hour, and several attempts, to defeat it and the Jackdaw had minimal hull left at the end).

It was a full game. Starring Aveline de Grandpré, an middle class Afro-French woman in New Orleans during the 18th century and a contemporary of Ratonhnhaké:ton. She also guest stars in bonus missions in ACIII and ACIV.
The announced DLC is Freedom Cry, which stars Adéwalé, Kenway's Quartermaster.
Liberation was originally a handheld game. And though it was a standalone game it was a bit disappointing that the first female AC protagonist was delegated to a handheld spin-off.
However I just saw on steam that there is going to be an HD remake of Liberation in January. Not sure for which consoles other than PC.
I am actually quite stoked to get into assassin's creed again. Do I miss anything of value if I skip Revelations and AC3? Because I got bored with revelations pretty quickly and heard too much bad about 3 to waste time or money on it.

The 360 version came with advertisements saying "coming soon", so I think it'll be out on that.

Ah it makes sense now. I don't play handheld games, thus they don't exist.
Anyway, please tell me you didn't just call PC a console?
And You won't miss much if you skip relevations and AC3. Just read up on the story.

Just beat it also.
Overall I agree with the likable assessment reflected in posts above, with the following exceptions:
Optional objectives not always clear If you rush through, its easy to skip the fact that you were supposed to air assassinate that guy instead of using a blow gun.
Ship boarding gets repetitive I wish there was more variance in taking ships. After about the fiftieth boarding, I felt that my fleet was good enough and decided to just blow up and loot ships. I would only board ships if I needed to repair..
Mid-combat boarding is cheesy While its a way to stay alive in big fights, I don't like the fact that I can board a ship while engaging three others, repair the Jackdaw, and instantly resume at a higher health against the others. While I utilized this tactic a lot in some of the harder fights (some of the later forts), it felt cheesy every time.
Right now, I'm at 96% synch, with everything missing being mission related. I've got two legendary ships left to defeat (the top corner two), but am worried I can't get 100% synch. One of the Abestergo challenges is to infiltrate 3 warehouses without triggering an alarm. I did that once out of all of those without realizing the Challenge was there. Not sure how to go about that..
Anyways, I highly enjoyed the sandbox nature of the game. It was easy to lose oneself in hunting, pirating, whaling, and everything else that made the game awesome. It left me wanting more.

One of the big problems I had with Assassins Creed III (and the main reason I never finished it) was that it felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be. Roaming the world felt very sandbox, but once you got into any mission it felt incredibly on the rails - to the point where at times a failure to use the exact tactic the game desired, regardless of the efficiency of others, resulted in loss o sync and having to start over.
Was that fixed in Black Flag, or do I still have to use sneak at this point then have to use combat this other?

Its a bit more balanced. There are only a couple of missions where you 'absolutely can't be seen or fight', its a lot more varied and enjoyable than AC3. That said, for %100 synch, you do have to do some missions in a certain way, though you can still complete them without the extra objectives while still progressing the story.
