New to GM'ing (and PFS), have a few questions

Hi all,

After playing pathfinder & other roleplaying games for several years now, I recently made my first steps in the world of GM'ing.

I did this by running First Steps Part 1 at home for some of my friends with them using pre-gens. Although there were some hickups here and there, it has gone ok for a first time. But I also realized that I'll need to read up on some rules again & prepare a lot more for a session if I would want to gm for PFS.
This was partly the reason why I GM'ed the session. I thought it would be nice for our local PFS group that started up recently to have more then 2 GM's in the not to distant future.

I had a few questions concerning filling out chronicle sheets (haven't done it yet, but we meet on a regular basis and I still have all the info I need of the session to fill them in.)

Here are the questions (some are scenario specific and thusly will be spoilered :

- If a player plays a pregen in this scenario, I assume that starting XP is 0 (due to the fact that you would need to apply this chronicle sheet to a new character), initial prestige/fame would also be 0, but what needs to be put into Starting GP? 0 or 150? What do I have to put on my GM chronicle sheet?

- If I got it right, you can buy items/do things with prestige at the end of the session and write it in the notes section of the sheet. Am I also correct that this could also be done before a new session? (Preferably not to many items, or in a list format, as to not take to much of the GM's time)

- If I buy items with a price of 25+ GP, I have to put this on the Inventory Tracking Sheet. I recently read something concerning the first level rebuild and that you could "rework" your starting equipment as if you started out with better equipment (hide armor to breastplate, longbow to composite longbow, chain shirt to masterwork chainshirt) (until you get to lvl 2).
So that for example you start out with a chain shirt, but after session 1 you rebuild your character and with the money you now have give him a masterwork chain shirt instead. I was wondering, how would you mark something like that on the Inventory Tracking Sheet? (seeing as you would in principal be reselling the chain shirt at full value)

Scenario specific questions:

- When is an item considered "not found". For example, is the potion of invisibility considered "not found" in one of the following situations :
1) Auntie Gilga feels threatened and drinks the potion of invisibility.
2) Auntie Gilga gets intimidated and gives the party some of the info they want and after that they leave, so she has no need to use her potion.
What about her scroll of remove disease? I see no reason why the party would search her person unless they knock her out cold?

- There are 2 items on the chronicle sheet that I wonder wether or not they are erroneous, namely :
Wand of disguise self (5 charges, 75 gp)
Wand of knock (11 charges; 990 gp)
From a topic I read recently on here, I saw that normally if you can only buy the item a limited amount of times from the chronicle sheet it will have a number behind it. Does it mean that these 2 items can be bought indefinitely?

One more question, but this one is character creation related. I recently read that you can make Aasimar, Thiefling & Tengu characters without needing some special boon if you have the right additional resource for them. Now I don't own the Advanced Race Guide, but I do have the Dragon Empires Primer which features the Tengu. The only difference that I could see between the entry in there and the one on the online reference is that instead of common & tengu they have tien & tengu. I know that mine would start with common instead of tien, my concern is wether or not I would be allowed to play the Tengu character :)

These are all the questions I could currently think of. And I'm looking forward to playing/DM'ing some more PFS in the near future :)

Starting gold should be 150 or the gold remaining from character creation if they wait to apply the chronicle until after the character is created. GM chronicle would be the same unless you have an existing level one character. If you do, it would be the gold amount on your previous chronicle (providing you are keeping up on your chronicle numbers).

Yes

25 gp items and higher do have to be recorded on the tracking sheet. I don't recall anything about "reworking" equipment under first level rebuild. You can sell your starting equipment and purchase upgraded equipment with what gold you have received from missions.

I hope that helps and makes sense. The last question was a bit unclear but I hope I got it. Welcome to PFS!!

On the spoiler questions:

The first question: The first scenario answer would be that iit would be considered not found. The second scenario would be not found as well unless the party manages to relieve her of those items.

The second question: if there is no limit listed after an item, you can buy as many as you want. It was my understanding that items that do not have a full amount of charges have a limit of one.

In regards to your character creation question: A Tengu would be possible to play with the Dragon Empires Primer.

Well, I read this topic some time ago and I wondered how the main question in there interacted with the Inventory Tracking Sheet :

The 4.2 Guide says the following about first-level retraining:
"Pathfinder Society is all about player choices and living with those choices once you’ve made them. However, at the start of a Pathfinder’s career, you are allowed to adjust your character before settling in for the long haul. Before you level up a character for the first time, you may change any aspect of it except its Pathfinder Society Number. Changes may only be made between adventures and before beginning play as a 2nd-level character. Any exceptions will be noted in the Pathfinder Society FAQ. You are able to keep all treasure, Prestige Points, special boons, and XP that you have earned and apply them to a character once you retrain as long as it meets the criteria above."

So... does such a PC get to start their gear from scratch? Sell back unwanted stuff for full price? Do they have to keep existing gear (it says they're "able to") and must sell any unwanted stuff for half price? Details on this aspect of this totally awesome new rule would be appreciated. :)

and this was the reply of Michael Brock :

So that's what I meant with "reworking" your starting gear.

I hope this clarifies the question a bit better. When I was making the post I couldn't find the topic anymore, else I would have referenced it then.

Thanks for the response and I hope to have a lot of fun with PFS :)

Just mark the items as sold, and take the full value of the item instead of half value.

Note there are two types of items that you may not ever sell back, at any price, even under the rebuild rules:

  • items purchased with prestige points; and
  • consumable items which have been used, even if only partially.

For example, if you buy a wand of disguise self (5 charges, 75 gp) off a chronicle sheet, you may sell it unless you have used even one charge.

  • Silver Crusade 1/5

    Good questions!

I'm pretty new, too, and was I was told by someone that potions and items used up by the combatants would still be considered 'found', so I am glad to see the question asked here.

It does make me feel a little bad, though, that if I play an opponent a bit smarter (but still within the scenario's published guidelines), then I am punishing the characters two ways, both by giving them a potentially more difficult encounter but with less rewards for it.

Also, then, would I modify the chronicle sheet if something is found that is partially used up? Say, the Wand of X (Y charges) is used in the battle and is now a Wand of X (Y-1 charges)?

    Grand Lodge 4/5

If the opponent uses the potion during the fight, it is still considered part of the items listed for purchase on the chronicle.

And, no, do not modify the chronicle for the opponent using up charges form their wand.

Also note, it is no longer necessary to put that pregen chronicle on a totally new PC, just on a 1st level PC, so the gold to start would be however much the PC had not spend previously.

    Silver Crusade 1/5

kinevon, That about the potion is what I was originally told (I think by a VC or VL...), but it seems to be in disagreement with a VL above, where it is stated that a potion used by an opponent is considered not found. (Reducing charges would then just be a logical consequence, with some of the charges essentially being 'not found' since they were used.)

Is there a way to get a more definitive ruling?

So we currently have a conflicting view on if an item that gets used by an npc will appear on the purchase list of the chronicle or not.

Just a slight side question. If it's true that used items appear on the list, anyone have an idea how the adventurers would acquire the scroll other than knocking out the person and doing and searching for items on her person when she's out cold.

Anyway, I am already very happy that most of my questions got answered.
This weekend I will normally be playing my first society game as a player. Let's see how that goes :)

In this particular Act, the success conditions for the "loot" really is:

    Spoiler:
Rewards: If the PCs deliver the medicine and report

any information about Auntie Gilga Baltwin to Ollysta
Zadrian, give each PC 68 gp.

If you receive the reward in this case, leave the items on the chronicle as you're not supposed to be beating up little old ladies on the streets of Absalom. It creates ill will towards the Society as folks start to think of you as a random group of traveling murder hobos.

You do not have to defeat in combat everyone to get their stuff in PFS. It's part of the Reward Creative Solutions in the Guide. If you can successfully diffuse the situation and get the information/goal needed, you get the resources at the end of the day somehow.

    Silver Crusade 1/5

Sniggevert, I think your answer makes the most sense given that part of the Guide, which I hadn't been thinking about (if not in the more 'realistic sense'), so I think that is the standard I will use. (It also allows me to use the potions and wand charges, etc., without doubly-punishing the characters for either hard-fought battles or creative solutions that avoid the battle entirely.)

In the last encounter, I also had one of the opponents, as per the combat directions, flee after being brought down to a certain HP number. Given that that it is essentially a defeat, and that the rest of the group was defeated and captured, I think I would now keep a fleeing character's items on the Chronicle sheet, too.

Well I am glad to hear this. Because the last thing I want to be in pathfinder is a murder hobo, nor encourage other people to become one :)
