Week 57 of The Widow Wore Gold sees the third installment of Chapter Fifteen (Ex Una, Plures), in which we learn more about Surrogate technology, and why it's not at all a happy thing.
As always, if you like it, let me know! Tell your friends! Reblogs are always appreciated.
And if you don't like it, tell me! I mean it when I say I want to know!
Oh!
Other writer-y types, don't forget to link your stuff here in this thread!
Did you link it back on the first page and not since? RELINK THAT PUPPY.
We deserve a mutual appreciation society.

I'm just started the TWWG from the first post/chapter and am slowly making my way through. It's really good.
But I love film noir so I'm an easy mark. The only thing missing might be copious amounts of smoking and a solid description of the main character (at least as far as I've read). Maybe the next time Charlie Danger gets into a fight you have him step up to the mirror afterwards and describe himself by way of him observing the damage from the scuffle or something to that nature.
Keep up the good work Jemstone, you have a real gift.
* also I'm not on facebook, tumbler or any of that noise. So I just lurk...

You humble me. Thank you.
I've purposely kept Charlie's description vague, the same as I did Jack Powell, Conroy, and Becky Backbeat in Number One With A Bullet. I want them to be rather cypher-ish. Charlie is a San Franciscan native, his mother is from Nanjing, and he is purposely left a bit vague because I want him to be sort of an Anyman (not an Everyman) - he's someone you could see on the streets of San Francisco at just about any point in its (past or future) history and not notice. He blends in because that's how the city works. Part of this is expressed in the fact that he doesn't realize how solid his reputation is among the people who would seek him out. Or, at least, I want to reflect that through such things. I will think on how to do it better.
I'm really glad you're enjoying it! If you think others would like it, please point them at it.
I really appreciate your kind words. :)

Quick portrait of Richie Lurch I drew on my lunch break..
I just posted a comment on this over on the picture itself. Holy cats.
I'm so stunned and grateful right now.
Do you mind if I post this to the blog?

DUDE! ANOTHER GALLOWGLAS FAN!! I thought Ebon, Scint, and I were the only ones on this forum!
I've got signed copies of both Dead Weight books headed my way soon, he frequently goes to the Arizona RenFest where Ebon lives. His work is also a major influence on how I play fey in my Kingmaker campaign.

Hey, all, sorry for not posting a link this week. The news about Mr. Nimoy caught me... off guard.
This week on The Widow Wore Gold, Melody gets a little more insight into the nature of her existence. Also, some clues about the nature of the murder itself.
As always, reblogs and favorable mentions to your friends are welcome. And if you don't like it, do please let me know.
Orthos! I'm glad you're caught up.
I hope you're enjoying it so far. :)

It's time for a new chapter in The Widow Wore Gold! This week, Charlie and Melody continue their interview of the not-quite-murdered-just-yet murder victim, Mr. Stanley Von Staten.
Oh, and hey! Apparently if all goes well, I'll have some new reviews up over on "I Watched It On Purpose" this weekend.
Love bad movies, but don't want to waste your time watching them? (What kind of bad movie fan ARE you, anyway?)
Don't worry. We've got you covered.

Thanks for sharing Jem, my progress on reading has been hampered by my new job I just started last Monday.
I look forward to reading more and hopefully I'll be inspired to do some more illustrations should time allow.
Bad movies are a love of mine. My favorite include:
Gymkata
War Bus Commando
MegaForce
Doc Savage, Man of Bronze
And pretty much any movie with a cyborg in it...

I'm not sure how to make it look like she is a hologram with just pens. I'm hopeless in photoshop...
She's a great character, I have a lot more to read but if you kill her off I'll never forgive you. :P
You're going to give me a complex. Again, you humble me.
I won't kill Melody off.
The only minor quibble I have is that my surname is misspelled, but that's a minor, minor quibble. :)
Thank you so much!

Fixed, sorry about that.
I don't think many creative types enjoy working in vacuum. Creative work inspires creative work, so thank you.
The reality is I have to set aside daily drawing time at my new gig. I give myself a 30 minute warm up before I st in on design work so I'm attempting to do a daily portrait as part of that process. (you gotta limber up your hands and mind.) So if in the future you see more depictions of your characters do not be too surprised.
If I run out of ideas I might take some suggestions but tomorrow I've got my heart set on drawing Feyd Harkonnen.

Seriously, it was a minor quibble. I've seen much worse.

Well, you are most certainly welcome. I'm really glad you're enjoying the serial, and I hope to keep delivering on it for you, right up until the end (and maybe thereafter).
And I certainly won't complain about more of these delightful portraits. :)

This week on The Widow Wore Gold, Mr. Von Staten personifies the old statement of "it's better to ask forgiveness than permission," and quotes Andre Gide.
And, as usual - if you like it, let me know! Reblog that sucker! Tell your friends! My audience is entirely crowd sourced, and you are that crowd!
And if you don't like it - well, that will suck. But do tell me. Improvement in a vacuum is only possible if you're a Tardigrade. The little monsters.

My review of Blood Angels (otherwise known as "Thralls") is up over at I Watched It On Purpose.
Starring Lorenzo Lamas, if you can believe it.

Wow, just found this thread. I'm going to start reading some of the stuff posted y'all've posted...I'm always on the lookout for new things.
I'm a writer who doesn't write much. Lots of reasons...none of which I am beating myself up over at the moment.
My story Serving Girl went up on GigaNotoSaurus in February. It's a second-world fantasy about a...problematic homecoming.

It's good you aren't beating yourself up. I know a lot of people (myself included) who need to learn how to do that.
sets reminder to self to read Serving Girl later
I hope this thread is of good use to you. Post more of your stuff!

This week on The Widow Wore Gold, Mr. Von Staten reveals he hasn't been entirely truthful.
As always, if you like it, let me know! If you don't, let me know!
And don't forget, I'm running in a contest at work to see who can get the most reblogs, best creative content, and the like. Help me out! Can a brother get a reblog?

Well, if any writing content is welcome, I suppose I should link this here. I'm back to trying to keep my worldbuilding blog updating, fleshing out the lore of the world and its races right now, moving on to countries, religions, and other things to follow. No real schedule, just updates when I feel like writing something and get around to posting it. =)

I love writing! I really do...
It's just that I'm somewhat of a perfectionist for things I care about. Like writing, for instance. Which is really bad when writing your first draft...
I've been working on the first chapter of a serial for about... three months now? And I haven't even gotten the freaking first paragraph done, I'm too busy editing and revising my introduction because it has to be 9000% MORE THAN PERFECT!
...I hate myself sometimes. Why can't I just get my first chapter done, then revise it, then revise it again, then release it? I just have to be perfect, for some reason...

Forgot to mention, I've got another bad movie review up at I Watched It On Purpose, and another two in the hopper. They go up Mondays at 3pm EDT.
This week is Jack The Giant Slayer, which actually isn't all that bad a flick. To me, at least.

This week's installment of The Widow Wore Gold has gone up, which means it's officially Friday!
As always, it's cool if you like it, and it's cool if you don't. Either way, let me know.
As many of you know, the creative process requires feedback. Without it, you may as well be shouting into a well. If you dig the story, great! Share it with your friends, tell me, let's talk about it. If you don't, well, that sucks! But tell me just the same.
No one gets better without effort and input.

My creativity is a house with really bad plumbing.
Most of the time, nothing works at all. Then, something splutters, the whole place floods, and you stand there wondering what to do with all of this water when you haven't drunk anything in days. Then its gone, and you realize what you could've done with it.
And you weep bitter, salty tears.

Bad Movie Review Time once again!
This week’s review is the third of my four-review jaunt for the spring season. Up this time is “All Cheerleaders Die” a wretched romp that showcases characters who are truly, to the last of them, horrible people.
jemstone
It's Friday morning, and that means it's time for the next installment of The Widow Wore Gold! This week, Chapter 17 begins!
As always, it's cool if you like it. And it's cool if you don't.
If you like it, great! Tell me! Let me know what's working.
If you don't, well, not great! Tell me what's not working so I can fix it.
And as always, if you do like it, do please share it with folks.
jemstone
It's that time again.
(What time?)
Time for another... well, maybe not exciting, but certainly engaging installment of The Widow Wore Gold!
Yes, don't forget, true believers! Every Friday at 9am Pacific Time, Charlie Danger and his loyal Holographic Girl Friday Melody 725, and their Plucky Police Pal Danny Amirmoez work to solve the case of who... or WHAT... is trying to kill Mr. Stanley Von Staten, ridiculously rich philanthropic Captain of Industry!
Tune in here on this frequency each week! Make sure your digital interference reduction electrodes are firmly attached to your scalp, and put on your Sen-So-Round goggles! It's time for Charlie Danger in The Widow Wore Gold!
This week, we find our hero sitting down for a tall, refreshing beverage with Danny Amirmoez at Richie Lurch's bar, where their conversation is already under way...
I think listening to all those Duotang Chesterfield's Mystery Theater and Thrilling Adventure Hour podcasts might be influencing me today...

This week on The Widow Wore Gold - Just how exactly DO you get away with murder in a constant surveillance society?
As always, if you dig the story, great! If you don't, well, not great, but let me know! Constructive feedback always welcome.
And don't forget, you can start reading from the beginning here!
jemstone
This week on The Widow Wore Gold, Charlie reveals his thoughts on who is out to kill Stanley Von Staten, and why.
As always, if you dig this serial, do please let me know. If you don't, that's cool, but let me know as well! I genuinely take all input to heart, and very much appreciate it!
If you like it, tell your friends! My audience is crowd-sourced, and you are the crowd!
jemstone
Hold on... is Von Staten a Doctor Who reference?
While I am a terribly long-term Whovian, it is not a Doctor Who reference.
If anything, he's a direct callback to those upper crusties from the early 1900's who still used their full, very flowery names to show just exactly how hoity their toity was.
It's a semi-concerted effort to mix the methods and genre tropes of gumshoe noir detective novels with high technology and post-modern/post-humanism.
There are definitely other tributes to some of my favorite science fiction in there, though. :)
jemstone
The Widow Wore Gold hits week 71, and starts Chapter 18 (I Am A Blind Man, She Is My Eyes), in which Melody starts poking at the mystery of Maxwell's unusual "gift."
As always, if you dig the story, awesome! Tell your friends, spread it around. Reblog the hell out of that bad boy. My audience is completely crowd sourced, and you are that crowd.
If you don't dig it, well, that isn't awesome. But do tell me why. I can't improve if I don't get feedback.
jemstone
Oh, and for those interested, a couple of "Americana Obscura" pieces...
The Man In The Diner, a story about the ghosts of places and the connections they depend on.
Turned Round One Time Too Many, in which we meet Bobby Ray Hurley, who got a big old crow comin' down after him.
jemstone
This week on The Widow Wore Gold, Melody, well... I don't want to say "talks to her selves" but that's about the sum of it.
Remember, kids, writing distributed consciousnesses is HARD.
As always, if you like what you read, do please spread it around. "Likes" are nice, but Reblogs are the only way other people see what you're liking.
And if you don't like it, well, tell me! I can't improve without input.
Oh! Godfang! I did read your story, and I thought it a fun read. The irony and the humor were amusing. :)
jemstone
This week on The Widow Wore Gold (Chapter 19: Skyscrapers and Wax Wings), some thoughts on Time, and Memory, and how they're different for Humans and AI's, and why that's a problem for Charlie.
As always, if you like it, tell your friends! Tell me! Tell SOMEONE!
Share it. Reblog it. Paste the link to your twitter. Tattoo it on your head!
If you don't like it, tell me! Can't fix it if I don't know what's wrong, now can I?

For those of you paying attention, The Widow Wore Gold will wrap up on my Tumblr on Friday, August 28 2015 at 0900 Pacific Time.
89,951 words, twenty chapters, and an epilogue.
It took a lot out of me. It's hard to write a locked-room mystery where the room is an entire city, but it was really, really rewarding.
Hopefully at least a few of you will like it. :)
