FDR served 3 terms and was elected to a 4th in 1944, but died the next year. The war was given as reason for breaking the precedent.

Soon after, the 22nd amendment was written to limit Presidents to two terms.

I don't think it really was necessary or that much of a big deal. Several Presidents had run for a third term before and none succeeded. I think it was a good thing during WWII, since FDR was an exceptional president.
It didn't apply to Truman, who succeeded FDR, but he didn't even win a second full term.
