My first thought upon seeing the Mythic Adventures book was "Nice. Do I really need it, though?" My party is about to start a Skull and Shackles path, so I have some time, but if our next path ends up being WotR (likely - for I like it so far) will I have to buy Mythic Adventures before my players fall into the big pit in Kenabres?

The Mythic rules are available in the SRD, either on Paizo's official one or at d20pfsrd.com. So no, you don't have to buy it. It's a good book with nice art though, so I'd suggest at least picking up the PDF. :)
It is possible to run the adventure path without the Mythic rules, but it requires a good bit of rework on the party of the GM to strip the mythic enemies of their mythic abilities and rework the encounters.

If you're a GM who wants to run Wrath of the Righteous... you'll need to check out the Mythic rules even if you want to run the AP as a non-Mythic one, since you'll need to know what to change and how to interpret the mythic elements that are increasingly built into each adventure.

Also, you don't need the mythic rules till the end of the first book. The players don't start out mythic. You as the DM may want to read it before hand though as it helps understanding what's coming, and the traits in the players guide lead to it.
I believe that there is actually a part in the first episode of the adventure path that explains exactly this problem and suggestions to fix it
The section on the traits in the first adventure describes how the traits increase in power as the story progresses. They "power up" after the mythic awakening and each have a plot tie in during the third book.
I have some time, so I'll probably add the book to my monthly shipment at some point before I start preparing the campaign. In the short term, I'll refer to the PRD as I read the path chapters. Thanks, all!
