Mythic Adventures: How to use Surge?

Surge (Su): You can call upon your mythic power to overcome difficult challenges. You can expend one use of mythic power to increase any d20 roll you just made by rolling 1d6 and adding it to the result. Using this ability is an immediate action taken after the result of the original roll is revealed. This can change the outcome of the roll. The bonus die gained by using this ability increases to 1d8 at 4th tier, 1d10 at 7th tier, and 1d12 at 10th tier.

During a mythic adventures play test this weekend (Fire Over Blackcrag) I attempted to use my surge ability to confirm a critical hit.

However, the GM had already announced that I did not confirm, an so said that I could not use the above ability. That time had passed he said.

He seems to think that the phrase "after the result of the original roll is revealed" is referring to the result of the die roll itself, not the outcome/result of the situation.

So according to him, if I roll a 5 on my attack, I can opt to use surge to increase it, but not if the result of the attack has already been declared (a miss).

Whereas I thought that if I rolled a 5 on my attack, I could determine if that was a hit or miss, AND THEN use surge to possibly change the outcome.

So, really, how is this ability supposed to work?


Given all of the abilities that say "you can't use this after the result of the roll is revealed", we have two options:

1. "Result of the roll" = "Number on the die": Then every single ability that says "you can't use this after the result of the roll is revealed" would be utterly useless.
2. "Result of the roll" = "The ramifications of that roll": Then the game actually makes sense.

You should have been able to reroll and try to confirm again. Mythic is mythic--you change fate by throwing your raw awesomeness at it.

Remind your GM that those mythic monsters can (and absolutely should) do that too.
