Using alternate locations?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Most of my games are 2 or 3 players so we often don't get to use the 4, 5, and 6 player locations from scenarios. If I'm playing a 2 player game that requires 4 locations can I just choose from the other available scenario locations to spice it up a bit?

Black Fang's Dungeon:
1. 1 - Desecrated Vault
2. 1 - Temple
3. 1 - Shrine To Lamashtu
4. 2 - Throne Room
5. 3 - Thassilonian Dungeon
6. 4 - Warrens
7. 5 - Deeper Dungeons
8. 6 - Mountain Peak

A 2 player game only gets to use locations 1-4. Would I be compromising the game if I chose to use locations 5-8?

When I replay a scenario I've already completed, I shuffle the total locations for the scenario and deal out the number of locations proper for the number of players. So far this hasn't changed much in the play of the scenarios except for Black Fang's Dungeon, where the lack of the desecrated vault made the scenario easier.
Mildly funny story: the first time I attempted this reshuffle trick was in a solo game of Brigandoom, and I ended up dealing the normal three locations. In order.

I was wondering something similar. There's probably a reason the earlier locations are mandatory every time you play, but I may try trading out some of the later ones, just for variety.

Being new, and not having a chance to play with friends yet, I've tried the game 3 times in solo mode, always playing the first Brigandoom scenario, with different characters. Sometimes, I use one character, and sometimes two. So it's already getting a little redundant having the same locations every time.

Silver Crusade

Following up - I looked over the locations for Brigandoom, and they do have different themes, and different amounts of each type of card.

So if you trade out a location with 4 monsters and 2 barriers for one that only has 1 monster and 1 barrier, then the game becomes much easier, due to the lower number of banes to overcome.

On the other hand, if you play with one or two characters, then Ezren never gets to visit the Academy (the location added with the 3rd character), which is the best place to pick up new spells, because they make up half of that location deck. So a spellcaster who played with 3 or more characters will have more chances to pick up new spells than one who only played the same scenario when there were 2 characters. That's hardly fair.

So besides varying the locations for variety, you also might want to include locations that have lots of boons that particular characters might want to pick up. But you should make a point of keeping the total number of banes across your locations roughly the same as what it would be if you hadn't changed locations, to keep the difficulty at the level it should be.

My point is that I wouldn't change the locations randomly. Look at what card types are normally at each location and make intelligent decisions based on that.

There's usually a good reason for why we've put each location in a particular spot.

Also, keep in mind that you will be facing many of these locations in future chapters, and locations tied to higher numbers of players in the current scenarios will often be tied to lower numbers in future scenarios, and vice-versa.
