Maneuver Training (alternate)

i am of the opinion that monks, as a 3/4 BAB d8 HD non-spellcasting class, ought to have a built-in way to viably perform combat maneuvers as a consolation to them being designed as a combat-utility class rather than a combat-heavy class. the following is a simple proposal to amend a class feature not only to better enable such utility, but to put the training in 'training':

Maneuver Training (alternate)

Spoiler:

At 3rd level, a monk never provokes an attack of opportunity when performing a combat maneuver, and he uses his monk level in place of his base attack bonus when calculating his Combat Maneuver Bonus. Base attack bonuses granted from other classes are unaffected and are added normally.

I've been using that modification for a few sessions now and it doesn't break anything, it actually makes the monk flow really well in combat.

you know, 'virtual BAB' from a 3/4-BAB to a full-BAB class (without multi-classing) is the same math as adding a +1 per 4 HD and rounding fractions up.

that said, and to keep up with ramping CMDs, why not:

Maneuver Training (alternate):

Spoiler:

At 3rd level, a monk never provokes an attack of opportunity when performing a combat maneuver, and he gains a competence bonus to his CMB and CMD equal to half his monk level.

oooh me likey.

That's nice. It, effectively, makes you a 1.25 BAB class regarding maneuvers.

I like that idea, it makes a lot of sense. I'm going to implement the competence bonus in my next session and I'll post the results.
