The Erase Spell and the Sihedron Rune...

Rise of the Runelords

I've a small question for people to bandy about. There are several hints fairly early in the game that someone is using the Sihedron Star as a means of "harvesting" the "greed" in people's souls and that it's of vital use to this Master. So what would the result be if the PCs start using Erase on the Giants and other foes before they die? It's stated in the module that it was the PCs' assault on the giants that ultimately provided Karzoug with enough greed-energy to jumpstart his efforts to return to the world.

But Erase is a low-level spell and could easily be enchanted into a wand. Seeing that giants have a high Constitution, they're not about to die instantly after being brought to negative hit points. So if the players start actively working to eliminate Sihedron Star markings on their foes before they die, wouldn't this provide players with some breathing room? (And it might also make Karzoug consider them a greater threat seeing they're deliberately working to stop his return by eliminating those Runes.)

Erase spell description wrote:
Erase removes writings of either magical or mundane nature from a scroll or from one or two pages of paper, parchment, or similar surfaces. With this spell, you can remove explosive runes, a glyph of warding, a sepia snake sigil, or an arcane mark, but not illusory script or a symbol spell. Nonmagical writing is automatically erased if you touch it and no one else is holding it. Otherwise, the chance of erasing nonmagical writing is 90%.

Off-hand, I would say it doesn't work because Giants aren't paper or a similar surface.

Erase Tattoo might work for creatures that wear a Sihedron tattoo, but the spell description doesn't mention branding, which is how the Giants are marked.

Also, the Star tattoo is not writing, it's art. That just makes it even more an invalid target.

By all means let them do it if they think of it. But it need not affect the plot in any material way if you don't want it to. After all, it's not as though the number of deaths to power Karzoug's return is written down anywhere.

I disagree the Sihedron rune not art but a rune and a rune by definition is writing
