Discussion thread for Goblinworks Blog: Just Keep Truckin'

Ooh... my analytical brain just loves all the numbers in this one. Congratulations on the funding, and a big welcome to Zeke! Great stuff in the portfolio.
Also nice to see there are 14 of us Hellknights Most Wanted desperadoes. Let's have a shout-out from the rest of you so we can compare Desperado Do's and Don'ts.

Maybe a bit more on the Paypal thing. Paypal has a requirement that the goods paid for be shipped or the service delivered within a short time window from when the payment is processed. While I know there's lots of counter examples of people offering the same kind of things we are on multi-year timelines, we've got a particular sensitivity because of the volume of business Paizo does with PayPal. We just can't jeopardize that relationship even by proxy. So we're complying with the letter of the terms of PayPal service rather than what appears to be the more "accommodating" industry practice.

And with Paypal having frozen accounts in the past for weeks at a time for violations of their terms, it's probably best not to use the service.

Please tell me you will accept Paypal, and i will be very happy.
Can you get Visa debit cards thru your bank? There are also pre-paid Visa debit cards which you just buy and spend. Both those should be usable thru the normal Visa CC processing system. ...Although if you are boycotting Visa as a company, not just opposed to credit cards as such, that probably doesn't help.

Thanks for the update! It's always interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes stuff, and your transparency and communication is commendable.
I have a question about stretch goals. You said your goal was to bring in Sean Reynolds for the Emerald Spire Superdungeon (awesome!). You said you're $30,000 away, which means you're effectively at $1,120,000, correct?
There was also a stretch goal to add another mini at $1.1 million. Does that mean you'll be adding another mini to the mini set?
Thanks again!

A lot of hard work being done at GW HQ. Very good to see the transparency.
I notice Shroud of the Avatar is doing a monthly payment option above and beyond their original kickstarter (which they smashed by almost double ie +1m$ extra) for the higher tiers they have done eg upwards of 11,000$. Now I can see a reason for doing this for people who want a higher tier. In fact I'd love the alpha tier but could not stump up in one lump sum. That said, my initial feeling on the subject is that this is a WRONG move by Portalarium to open up this option this soon in the title's production. I think the nature of Kickstarter is that if you cannot afford a certain level (as a backer) then don't take on so much risk; particularly being caught up in the first rush of enthusiasm for a large project that is relatively long in development. Now anyone is free to act as they decide, but I think the weight of the project shifting too much onto the shoulder's of people's good will; particularly as it could be conceived as a sub for the game before it's already out!
As above I can see the utlity of offering the option (even for myself), but it does not sit well with me and I think that's something to keep sight of for building respectful relationship with customers: The temtptation to "milk" freely offered money is no doubt high, but it comes with a cost of uneasiness, is possibly one way to put it into words. Anyway thought I'd flag that up for consideration. I realise the highest risk in this project is likely going to be the development stage and all extra cash raised is significant to reducing that, but nonetheless, responsibility to customers is still a valuable thing, in my book. Ryan even said this in the kickstarter to paraphrase: Don't get yourself out of pocket.
I'm very happy personally more people can have the option to join the Early Enrollment process, as the project picks up momentum and there are spaces still available it all helps it come together.

Can't really speak to the Twice Marked other than it states those so marked would have access to content not otherwise available (so maybe a trip to the Boneyard in "ghost form"?)
I am expecting regional trait packs to function much like the ones in the Golarion setting, though modified for MMO play. Access to special traits and possibly some other game aspects (resistance to certain energies, such as those taking the regional trait packs for any of the far north areas gaining a minor resistance to cold). Such traits are found in various books (Inner Sea Guide, Gazetteer) and in many of the published Adventure Paths (AP's), plus in Paizo's blogs. What remains to be seen is how they will be modified to fit an MMO experience, as it is quite different than PnP games. I hope this will be revealed soon :)

I've a couple of thoughts on Goblinworks next round of crowdfunding:
For international customers the presence of physical rewards in a package can actually be a disincentive to contribute. Issues associated with shipping costs and risk that the package won't actually ever arrive. Goblinworks might consider solely digital alternative packages where elements such as miniatures are included. Believe doing so would be favourable to Goblinworks. Looking at Shroud of the Avatar kickstarter, almost as many people selected digital only options as ones with physical rewards. Also reduces shipping and logistics and overheads costs (flagged by Chris Roberts on Star Citizen as a big issue with physical kickstarter rewards).
Also would be nice to have more information on what the various add-ons do or offer. I'm tempted to purchase the regional trait pack ... but I have no idea what it does or what the options mentioned such as Mwangi Expanse mean and whether they align with my character concepts. The same applies to additional alliance pack. It would be nice to have a list of available alliances - if I saw one that aligned with my character concept I'd certainly pay for it.

For the Regional Trait Pack, I've used the Pathfinder Wiki geography page to look up the various regions.

Thanks for the link. Nice website.
I do think it would be in Goblinworks best interest to provide a bit more information and make it easier for potential customers. I appreciate Goblinworks/Paizo have dedicated fans who know what the various reference mean, but would expect that to attract new customers, broaden the game's appeal, etc., they ought to provide a bit more information. Provides confidence in the product being offered and reduces risk that it will be perceived as a niche product for an already knowledgeable clique.

It does not surprise me that the Twice-Marked of Pharasma is popular: I think it sounds useful eg rezzing somewhere useful or even going to some spirit realm?!
Whereas the regional and other packs could be quite limited utility. Again the extra training time seems very valid and a safe bet.

Thanks Quandary.
I have come to terms with getting a credit card (grudgingly). And yes, i am just opposed to credit cards per se. ;)
To make a long story short: germans employ plastic money alien to a typical US credit card. If you are REALLY curious about this:

A Region Trait Pack will provide the character with an achievement stating the country they hail from, a title, and a small mechanical effect, all based on the country of origin selected when the pack is used.
I'm not sure how closely the "small mechanical effects" in PFO will match those in the tabletop game, but a filter-able list of tabletop traits can be found here. It doesn't work very well on my Android phone, but I think it will let you filter by region name.

I just happened to though of this.
To those who didn't make the payment or failed. You think of doing a payment plan and offering them a second chance if they still want to do their donation.
I guess you would have some access to who didn't make the payment (I think with this). This would be a second chance for them to still contribute and get their kickstarter rewards.
Just a thought, I saw another kickstarter do it this way.
