I thought this short video about the D&D movie was amusing.
Bards... Rogues... they're all the same. What're ya gonna do? Keep the Heal-bot handy I guess.

HASBRO DROPS MULTIPLE MOVIE AND TV SERIES ANNOUNCEMENTS ON INVESTOR DAY
They outline a lot of deets here in that article and it's starting to look almost like a Hasbro Cinematic Universe. And the way the money keeps rolling in they might just get something like that going.

dirtypool |

The point of the restructure is that money ISN’T rolling in. MTG and D&D are the products that are making money. Toy sales are down, board game sales are down. That’s why WOTC and Digital products are now their own division - to streamline cost structures and maximize profit.
I wonder - is a drastic restructure that changes the way D&D functions as part and parcel of Hasbro something we may have seen indications of? Something like contracts being cancelled or not renewed, sudden settlements?
Licensing products to film and television companies isn’t a case of the profitability of Hasbro proving the value of the franchises but of Hasbro trying to increase the value of those franchises.
Also it isn’t “starting to look” like a Hasbro Cinematic Universe, it HAS looked like a Hasbro Cinematic Universe since Hasbro and Paramount announced their intention to create a Hasbro Cinematic Universe back in 2015.

Dragons against swords "Haha come at me valiant heroes." Dragons against sidewinders "Ow man that hurt, I think I'm dying here Larry."
It all depends on what edition rules they use and DR. Non-magical missiles might not hurt a dragon at all if it's old enough to have DR/magic. I admit, I have absolutely no clue on how 5E handles that.

But it's how a movie would handle it, so I'm gonna say CGI

So, a trained and/or talented actor can portray different types of personalities. Grant is known for non-threatening, charming types, so he's probably been typecast into those roles, but it won't surprise me if he's able to pull off a completely different type of character. And there's lots of different types of villains.

Well, I didnt pick him. Though, Grant does play smarmy a-hole characters pretty well. I think he will be fine. I didnt think Ledger would be a good joker. Cant knock it until you rock it.

A lot of bad guys in tabletop campaigns I've played in were smarmy a-holes. An evil vizier type role requires a great deal of smarm (also, the appearance of being benignly bland)

He can play sinister, dark and evil as well as the humourous fops he's best-known for. He was a bad guy (kind of) in THE GENTLEMEN and he played a very conflicted, corrupt character in A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL, as well as hyper-insane version of Simon Cowell in AMERICAN DREAMZ. He also plays the villain in PADDINGTON 2.

Maybe after DaFoe in that other D&D movie, they were afraid to hire someone who would eat the rest of their scenery...
Ooh, what if the scenery was all CGI? Would he have imploded after all the scenery-chewing? My brain...

IMDB has given it the working title of, "Dungeons & Dragons (2023)", and slated for release 3 March, 2023.
I'll believe it when I see it at this point!
:D
Any ideas on what the film might be about given that the landscape of Iceland appears to be a big part of the setting?

There is this tweet from the director where he displays the production slate.

Iceland is beautiful and has passed some good film incentives in the last few years. There's some lush green terrain, some striking terrain features, volcanic activity. There are a lot of settings that could fit in Iceland.

Maybe they decided to film an active volcano scene live.
That would be pretty awesome, even if they had to CGI in around it.

Quark Blast |
Seems unlikely that they had a script and pre-production ready to go around an active volcano and so started shooting in Iceland because Fagradalsfjall decided to cooperate.
The article I linked indicated that a (the?) major setting for the movie is represented in the overall landscape there. And overall that would work for Icewind Dale would it not?
Is there any published setting that would work just as well?

The entire film isn’t being shot in Iceland though, just a small number of scenes that were able to be accomplished without the principle cast. Second Unit stuff.
The location may also have nothing to do with ice, or minimal usage of ice. The primordial rockscapes in Prometheus were shot in Iceland, the craggy alien vistas in Interstellar, as well as the mountain ensconced seaside village where Aquaman was helping the fishermen in Justice League were shot in Iceland.
