I felt the same.
Spoiler:
The make an admiral out of the kid and then don't give him anything to do? They actually give him a ship (without a crew) to let him run away with it? One of the biggest resources they ever had?
The scene on the lake was as jarring. How did Ender get there? How did they find him? How long did he stay there and where did he get supplies?
I'd rate the movie just above average at best. The younger actor's performances were mostly good. The older actors barely had anything to do, because their characters were one-note. I would have felt insulted in Viola Davis' place, especially. Her character was a joke.

Doesn't something similar happen at the end of the book?
I haven't seen the movie, but it's sorta really simplifying the ENTIRE relationship from what happens there, but it's similar to the outcome in in the book, but not exactly correct.
