Well, after her comments (as Vincent mentioned), she's now under observation... aka suicide watch. I can't help but believe that she really is trying a reverse psychology thing. By saying she wants to die, she's demonstrating an unhealthy desire for death therefore she will likely be assigned life...
Or she's just a media-seeking black-hearted woman.
I agree with you, Ebon. If you were truly committed to getting the death penalty you'd fire your legal team before they wasted any time trying to argue to have your sentence reduced. You'd just let JM fry you with no rebuttal and be done with it.
Religion being what it is and jury sizes being what they are, the odds of either not having a hung jury or having a death penalty verdict are fantastically low to begin with. This went exactly how I expected it to go.
