The Sims vs PFO

With the size and scope of the sandbox that is being attempted, and what people WANT to have in the game, i was wondering what customisations we REALISTICALLY would like to see in PFO.

These include things like:

Custom Weapons/Armour:

Not just custom enchantments. Imagine when you are crafting something special, that you can CHOOSE what the pommel will look like, or the way the blade will be shaped. You could CHOOSE whether you wanted stupid looking shoulder pads on your armour or not.

Housing:

Are houses going to be enterable/customisable or simply safe gold depositories? Can you buy furniture and trophy cases for it? Can I change the look of my house, will it have a standard door and windows?

Food and Drink Recipes:

IF food is included, I think it would be interesting to see whether recipes are known or have to be discovered.

These are just a few things off the top of my head, that I think could possibly be implemented at some point in the future, that would help enrich the non-combat experience in PFO.

The reason most MMO's have poor visual customization options, is because of the network strain.

Any customization will have to be done with lists and sliders, everything you see needs to be inside the client, otherwise you spike bandwidth when you see something new. Also, the game engine needs to be able to scale detail back very well if you have a bunch of customization. the more players can customize their characters, the more lag you will see in crowds.

I would expect lots of home options far down the road, EE buildings will probably be pop-up menus when you click on the door. Ryan said he wanted to attract more female gamers, and they predominantly like games that give them more customization to toy around with.

I would expect food and drink to function like the crafting system put before us, you find recipes, and the quality of materials determines the quality of the item. Discovering recipes through experimentation is fun and all, but everything will be discovered and published online after a while, and the system becomes redundant.

I've always wondered if it would make sense to portray characters in a very generic way until you actually "/inspect" them to get a more detailed picture.

Will be interesting to see what level of graphics they manage to churn out of the Unity engine and still sustain massive PvP relatively lag-free.

I guess initially early economy is all about crafting and properties adding value. Given settlements could become massive social hubs players may then want more identity ie graphical customisation. It would fit a sort of "forge" modding scene v well I think once the players are there (market) and eg established communities (demand) eg roles in settlements of 000's.

In terms of simulation, we know PFO will extend beyond: Adventure -> Exploration, Development and Dominion (how I originally read the title). That is to say our characters: Common Folk -> Heroes (us) -> Übermench

++ on food. I would rather have all but like 2 or 3 from each level Not listed online.

Ultimately I would love to see 1 or 2 different skins for armor, nothing that requires redoing the armors size though, just the appearance. Same with weapons. (This stuff should come well into release).

Writable books and scrolls!

Dyes for armor and clothing.

A poison system that couples with cooking materials to use as mats.

I'm sure I'm forgotten all kinds of things, but I'm sure others will cover them ;)

Do you mean you want there to be a few recipes that no one posts information about on the internet? That doesn't seem possible.

Indeed, if knowledge is what is needed. Short of a random solution tied to each character, and even then the ranges and possibilities will be posted pretty early on.

Wiki's are an inevitable portion of games, the only thing that can make a supprise in an MMO, is a scenerio that changes quite frequently. Also a large reason why GW is pushing for players being the primary content.

I think the crafters would enjoy discovering recipes for dishes. Sure people will be posting recipes all over the Internet and that's fine. But many, myself included, just wouldn't visit the sites until later. I don't expect there to be any secret once a few people get into the groove figuring the recipes out, but I think it would be fun.

posted this in another thread.

Please have many many different styles of armor.

I would love to, as a armorsmith or weapon smith be able to custom make armor.

So for example, what armor looks are based on your skill, with more armor unlocked the higher your skill level.

An example i used in another post was for weapons.

1) you picked weapon base type (longsword, raiper, greatsword...etc)
2) You picked a blade design (so number 25 longsword blade out of 50 different longsword blade designs)
3) you picked a hilt design (so number 45 hilt out of 50 different longsword hilt designs)
4) You pick a pommel ( number 32 of 50 different pommels)
5) after you picked the pommel you could use any gem you wanted for it.

Looks would be different than material. So you could make the above in any material you were good enough to do.

I would love to have that many different designs, where function is independent of looks. This could be used for armor also.

Your weapon could be 100% mundane but still impress people (status symbol). Holy crap is that a Dragon Bone longsword with a land shark tooth hilt and an Eye of Super Gem in the pommel? That must have cost a fortune to make!

There is a company that allows you to build your own sword using a system like you describe here. Not sure how difficult it would be to have this method in the game, but it looks pretty cool.

You can check it out Here

I would love to see a system like this in game. Would go some way towards crafters feeling like theyre crafting something, not just acting as an automated manufacturing line.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hm. I'd like there to intermittently be meteors seen in the sky that fall to earth leaving precious starmetal for any to harvest who can first reach it. Imagine the competition to get there first for the prize...

@Being, +1 for actual Skymetal falling to Golarion!

Thats a very cool idea!

You could potentialy do this in a slightly more sophisticated way, if the engine allows for it. LOTRO had a function that would adjust the view range based upon local "server load". I imagine it might be possible to adjust the level of detail displayed upon characters or other objects dependant upon local crowding...to display fewer details when there were many objects in the area and greater detail when there were few.

This would give players more consistant results for play experience in crowded areas but still allow for depth of detail when it wouldn't effect performance. I'm not sure what, if any, impact there would be on the art team in doing so? But it's a thought.

Definitely agree! Would create an instant flashpoint for the various companies/guilds/kingdoms in the area, definitely spice things up a bit.

Those meteors could even be summoned, either as a result of some escalation cycle or through player rituals.

"hey, we got enough archmages to try to summon a meteor tonight. Make sure we have master crafters online and the rangers are spread across the map. And keep a tab on our enemies in case they try something".
