As I wrote some weeks ago, I am getting back into RPG after many years and dm'ing my first pathfinder game using the Kingmaker adventure path.
My players are creating their characters using the 20 points built system, and I think one of them is making a big mistake, but not having experience with Pathfinder, I wanted to double-check with players knowing the system.
I told the players to create their char before we start the game and send them to me for approval. That player created a dwarf fighter that will specialize in 2H fighting. But he gave it 18 Str and 17 dex, thus, IMO, crippling his char for the future because his CON is not that good at 12(couting the dwarf +2 bonus) and his other stats are also all around 10 since he had almost no point left after boosting str and Dex so much, and he even had to lower his charisma down to 7. I honestly don't see him having fun at later levels and probably struggling to stay alive in battles before long.
Am I wrong to think that? I got half a mind to force him to redo his stats, but I want to make sure I am right in thinking he gimped himself for the future first.
All the other players are alot more balanced, with one stat at 16 and most of the others in the 13-15 area.

Point him towards these two guides:
Rogue Eidolon's Guide to Fighters
Two Hands are Better Than One
Both of these have good suggestions on how to build your stats at various point buy levels, as well as which race to choose, weapons, feats, and equipment. He would benefit from reading both of them, and should be able to make a character that is able to do well in Kingmaker.

An 18 Str and 17 Dex (and 12 con for dwarf) cost a total of 30 points. With a 7 Cha (9, -2 for dwarf), he *can't* have enough points to afford that. So yes... a mistake was made.
He would have to have 7,9,6 or 7,10,5 for mental scores to be able to afford that.
As for whether it's a good idea - if he keeps his mental scores near 10, a dwarf fighter should do pretty well, even with a 12 con. That high dex means a lot of AC boost, especially once the armor training kicks in.

Aye with Majuba, sounds like he used a 25-point build. Beyond fixing that, I wouldn't correct a player on how they want to build their character. If you're worried he won't like things, use the Pathfinder Society option: before reaching 2nd level, a player is allowed a complete do-over, keeping XP and treasure. That way they get to play the character they want and some trial and error is allowed.

I wouldn't force anyone to redo stats (except to be within the rules), but you may want to warn him that he's going a bit overboard on dex (and possibly str). This is more importand if he is newer to the game, I think he's going to want some skill points and a little bonus to will save (but maybe he doesn't).
As for if 12 con is enough for a fighter...
Math: assumes average hd and full for level 1
Level 1: +1 ability mod gives him 12 health. +2 would give him 13 or a 8% increase.
Level 5: +1 mod gives him 42 health [(10+5.5x4)+5]. +2 would be 47 or 12%
Level 9 (Assuming a +2 con item by now): +1 = 81 vs +2 = 90 or 11%
While I would rather have the extra 10-15% health for 2 point in the point buy, it's not the end of the world.
