Hello all:
I am playing a wizard (5th level) in S&S.
Having a great time.
I would like to have totem polls on the ship with indivisual "heads" with magic mouth on them.
I am looking for ideas to use on them.
The most obvious one is as a fire detectors.
The second one is as gaurds of some sort. That one is harder. I can think that i can set the condition as to go off if someone is not wearing somethig yellow, or escorted by someone wearing yellow.
But i was wondering if someone has some good ideas to use MM on.

If your GM agrees that the mouth of a statue opens to speak, and that a ring held in that mouth would fall, you can rig a big net with MMs at four corners, to drop when a command is given. Meantime, it's a safety net for men working in the tops, can speed them back to the deck, drop into it, then flip down from the edge to the deck.
If the rings can drop, a lot can be done that way. But GMs will vary on the ring trick. Watch Labyrinth with your GM first, maybe. You'll see what I mean...
And ponder the use of an animated picture (figurehead? statue?) not as a combatant, but as a distraction and alarm. Costly wondrous item, but far more versatile than Magic Mouth.

Magic Mouth also makes a good theft deterrent. Cast it on a pouch or a chest so if anyone but you opens the item it goes off. It is also good for a false trap. Just cast it where someone may suspect a trap and if they detect magic it will detect. You can also use this to create fake magic items and sell them.
Another good use it to pass secret messages. Cast it on an item with a trigger word that has to be spoken for the message to be delivered. If used on a scroll with a false message it is a great way to sneak in the real message.
I have also used it to make it appear that someone was saying something when they did not. Depending on how the GM interrupts the spell this may actually cause it to look like a person is saying something. The description say that if it is cast on a statue it causes the statues mouth to move so it may cause the persons mouth to move.
