Also, I noticed something interesting under Detect Evil that I think often gets overlooked. I have never heard of a paladin or cleric detecting evil and being stunned by its intensity.

Oh I've used it before to good effect. The evil creature has to be both in the overwhelming range and twice the hit die of the one doing the detecting. If a 5th level Paladin uses detect evil on the 12th level cleric of Lamashtu, then he deserves to have his brain seared by what he sees. It's also a good sign that discretion may be the better part of valor if that 12th level cleric is giving you the choice to fight or flee.

Joe the Merciless, Fighter level 50, would still only detect as Strongly Evil. And that's just the way it's supposed to be. The Paladin is meant to judge the wicked as a champion of his deity. Purely mortal evil, while he should strive to bring the perpetrator to justice, pales in comparison to the depredations of demons and champions of evil gods. If your Paladin is going around smiting every last commoner who he suspects of evil... Well, I'll just say he's one of the ones that give Paladins such a bad wrap.

neutral clerics of evil gods still detect as evil. someone under the effect of infernal healing also detects as evil. it isn't always the case that detecting as evil = bad guy. evil people wouldn't detect as evil either if under undetectable alignment or non-detection.
