Give me ideas for a crystal golem

Homebrew and House Rules

I am allowing a player to create a crystal golem but will not tell them the stats and abilities of that golem until it is created.

I am thinking about 8 hit dice, DR5/blunt, AC 21 or so.
it has a blinding flash ability by essentially using daylight channeled through its crystals. Im not exaclty sure what immunities and vulnerabilities to give it.

I may give it a berserk chance and add some kind of effect when hit by blunts weapons (blunt weapons beat DR but send shards flying.)

I want it to be fun and interesting to use but its ESSENTIALLY a pet/construct/ally for a player. using leadership I figure it should be about 2 or 3 CR lower than the player but have enough martial ability to give the player (who is a healer) a few offensive or self defensive options

just throw ideas at me and I will incorporate the ones that seem to fit best.

note: the characters are about level 9. so I am treating the golem at about CR 6 or 7.

at first glance I am looking at something along the lines of a wood or golem but modified to fit the flavor of crystal.

enough defense to survive in battles, but not so much offense to overshadow players or overbalance the group.

Vulnerability to sonic attacks would be traditional.

As for a special power... how about giving it a chance to refract ray spells targeting it in random directions?

How about giving it the Oread Crystalline Form alternate trait?

Crystalline Form: Oreads with this trait gain a +2 racial bonus to AC against rays thanks to their reflective crystalline skin. In addition, once per day, they can deflect a single ray attack targeted at them as if they were using the Deflect Arrows feat.

that sounds cool...

I think i would make it a random effect since its a golem. if hit with a ray there is a chance that it

1) defuses harmlessly
2) deflects to a random target (probably a random direction with a chance to hit a target in that direction)
3) hits a flaw in the crystal dealling double damage to the golem
4) fractures the ray sending lesser power rays in random directions.

that sounds cool... i will have to figure out a random table to make this work right.

I am also considering DR5/blunt.. however if hit by a blunt weapon the attacker makes a reflex save or gets hit by some amount of damage as shards spray from the impact site. say d4 damage for every 10 damage dealt or something. its not ment to be amazing... just an interesting side effect.

vulnerable to sonic is good, I should have thought of that...

hm... any other ideas?

I'm all for this ray effect. Golems are some of my favorite creatures because they make otherwise predictable spell effects have unexpected results. I would have it target a creature in the way of its random deflection; since it already has 9 possible directions (each direction around plus upward) the chances of it hitting a player won't be that big anyway, and they have no way of preparing against. Vulnerability to Sonic is a must-have.

The being hit by shards ability might be a little too much. Being only damage fully by blunt weapons is already enough of a strength, having it damage players too could be really annoying for them. Another cool effect you could have is whenever they're hit with Electric damage, they "hold the charge" and deal have half of that damage to any creature that hit it with a metal weapon or that it hits. You can describe it's body coursing with electricity and the players will get that they need to back away.

Perhaps in addition to being vulnerable to sonic, whenever it takes sonic damage it has to make a save or shatter? If it shatters, it should throw shards everywhere (a 10 or 15-ft radius burst).

Perhaps the deflecting ray ability could work like a missed attack with a thrown weapon? That'd be simpler mechanically.

Having the golem save to prevent shattering when i takes sonic damage would be too much. It's already taking a huge amount of damage from the attack.
