My guess would maybe go with the vermin companion. This would require GM intervention, due to Advanced Player's Guide coming out before the addition of Vermin Companions. It fits perfectly with vermin empathy.

Went with higher con to signify adapting to the blight with a strong fortitude and better than average charisma to show an ability to assert influence.
I would say go with a Giant Scorpion or a Giant Wasp. Both have decent secondary damage and both can be ridden when they advance to large. Also, both fit well in desolation that you character would like.
For race, either gnome or halfling if you want to ride them early, or a human with the Eye For Talent to give the companion a 2 int, thereby learning tricks and able to have 3 into by level 4. If not, then it can be left at 0 to keep the "mindless" trait. Human may be the best option to have feats right off and more tricks. With mindless, there would be no skill points, no feats and 1 trick plus bonus tricks
Feats would depend one what you decided was a final basic build.
