Sanctuary vs. Weird

Rules Questions

So I am running a pbp campaign in the Mwangi Expanse. One of the PCs cast the sanctuary spell and walked into the Area of effect for a totem of Anzaghan. My question is, does sanctuary protect the player from the weird spell that the totem would cast at him or not?

"This spell does not prevent the warded creature from being attacked or affected by area of effect spells."

(Taken directly from the Sanctuary description.)

so no bonus to saving throws or nothing?

Nope. It's a first level spell. All it does is in the spell description.

Weird is a targeted effect. It has the restriction of targets being within 30ft of one another...
Have the totem make the will save against your 1st level spell...

Will save for totem if successful, player gets will,if successful he doesnt die... interesting take...

Totem is a 20th CL artifact after all.
Magic item saves are 2+1/2CL...
Intelligent items use their own Wisdom mod...

It should crush the sanctuary...and it uses Weird at will...
